Anything But Hockey / Credit Card Fraud
« on: May 28, 2014, 04:09:56 AM »
A piece of advice to anyone that ever uses a credit card, especially online: regularly check your transactions. You never know when you'll be the victim of fraud. It happened for the first time to me this week. I am one of those people that uses his card "for the points" and makes payments throughout the month to cover for the purchases (so it's easy for transactions to hide in there). I have a few trusted places online that I use my main card for, but I will almost always use Paypal whenever I deal with a "small" or out-of-country business.

Checking my transactions statement today, I notice one that didn't seem right that went through on Sunday at some online sports merchandise site for ~$50. A quick online search shows LOTS of complaints about unauthorized charges through that "store". Anyway, I call CIBC, and turns out there's also a bunch more transactions pending, the 3 bigger ones out of China (2x at Aliexpress and one phone order) for over $225, all going through in the last 48 hours.

So, card cancelled, new card on the way, a few recurring payments need info changing, and my paranoia through the roof.

Fun evening...

Anything But Hockey / The latest Hollywood rip-off
« on: July 30, 2012, 03:02:46 PM »
Peter Jackson just announced today that The Hobbit will now be 3 movies instead of 2. WTF?!?!?

The Lord of the Rings, the smallest of the three paperbacks is about 440 pages, and this was 3 movies. The Hobbit is one, small book of 280 pages, and they somehow stretch it to 3 movies? What a freakin' joke.

Anything But Hockey / Windows 8 [merged]

Another company puts way too much focus on the "tablet experience". Completely ignoring workplace computers, and to a slightly lesser extent, home PC users. What a joke.

« on: February 29, 2012, 02:06:39 PM »
If the Sens can manage to play .500 hockey until the end of the year, it would give them 93 points, which is almost always good enough for a spot in the big dance. Ideally, 6th spot would yield the better chance of making it past the 1st round by playing whoever makes it out of the Southeast.

General Hockey Discussions / Radulov hits coach
« on: February 26, 2012, 10:27:57 PM »
I know this is old (a week or two), but former NHLer Alexander Radulov didn't like something his coach said, apparently. Ouch.

2011-2012 Gameday Threads / Gameday Thread, Part V - Gotta Hang On!
« on: February 02, 2012, 01:26:26 PM »
The margin of error is pretty thin for the Sens, as the standings in the East are so very tight. The Sens went into the All-Star break with 60 points and 30 games to play. The last 5 years, the 8th team in the East made the playoffs with 93, 88, 93, 94 and 92 points. So if that's any indication, the Sens need to play slightly above .500 hockey over the remaining games to be in a position to likely make the playoffs.

Next up, the New York Islanders, which the Sens will play 4 times over the remaining 2 months.

A game late, I know.

Tough month ahead, with games against the Flyers, Pens, Rangers and Bruins. Also a few 4 points games against teams like the Jets, Leafs and Habs.

Top Prospects & Binghamton Senators / Lehner could be in big trouble

A suspension almost guaranteed for his actions towards the refs in last night's game against Syracuse.

Personally I don't see the "abuse of referee" penalty he received (I don't equate trying to break free with abuse of ref) but that's what he got and those are never taken lightly.

Same shoulder he had surgery on this summer and hurt again earlier in the season is the problem after "stiffening up" Tuesday.

2011-2012 Gameday Threads / Gameday Thread, Part III - Hanging In There!
« on: December 01, 2011, 12:42:59 AM »
There's a stat out there that since the lockout, teams that are in a playoff spot on December 1st are almost guaranteed to make the playoffs. As luck would have it, the Sens currently hold the 8th spot in the East and it's December 1st.

Dallas is next.

2011-2012 Gameday Threads / Gameday Thread, Part II - Is this for real?
« on: November 01, 2011, 12:54:13 AM »
It November already, and the Sens are 7-5-0, with 3 shootout wins. Tied for second in the league in goals for and currently sporting the #1 powerplay. Not too bad. Can they keep it up?

First up in November, the defending Stanley Cup Champions, who are currently last in the East and second last in the league. But considering Ottawa's track record against Boston over the last 4 or 5 years, this is far from a gimme.

Apparently since he has a two-way contract, he was the one sent down today.
