TSN's reporting that Oilli is being shipped to the rangers for higgins and kotalik/gilroy.

I just laugh at this as sutter's trade for him last year meant that they lost cammelari, whose goals have been sorely missed, while olli has never clicked with the flames.

General Hockey Discussions / TSN's top ten plays of the decade
« on: December 29, 2009, 08:39:58 AM » check video player.

I think this is a pretty average sample myself. I mean about 3 of the goals are just from godawful defence (nash/forsberg) and biron's just damn lucky with his save.

What would you have liked to see?

- Personally (yes biased), Bertuzzi, naslund's magic goal against broduer in NJ in 2002-03.
-Zherdev coast to coast
-Stevens on kariya
- least one of the awesome fights

Anything But Hockey / Augmented reality and new John Mayer song clip
« on: October 23, 2009, 07:36:25 AM »
Even if you're not a fan it's a fun idea (and i love the song personally).

What you do is print out the heartbreak logo, or save it to a phone. Then hold the paper or phone to your cam on the page and the clip starts and you can see the clip and yourself in the background, kinda cool.

General Hockey Discussions / Luongo's contract [merged]
« on: August 27, 2009, 11:12:53 PM »
I think most Canucks fans are torn on this, so i'd be interested to hear from Sens fans on this issue.

Luongo wants a contract extension and it's safe to assume he wants more than the 7.5mn he's getting.

Would you re-sign him?

My thoughts:

- Luongo is in the top 5 goalies in the league.
- With Luongo we made the 2nd round of the playoffs twice and won the division twice
- He's our best player
- When hot, he can shutout nearly any team and goes through some nice streaks
- He may be even better if schnieder can develop more and play 20 games.

- He's been good in the playoffs but he's leaky in the major games
- He sucks up a lot of cap space for a team which needs another scorer
- Schnieder may be ready for full-time NHL duties and he's cheaper
- The old canucks did pretty well with a bum like cloutier in net, schnieder plus other assets in a luongo trade could make the nucks better
- Elite goalies aren't winning too many cups lately.

It's a common thing to hear people say the books are better (see Lotr thread) but there are cases where I think the film/tv adapation is better.

Examples for me:

- Dexter: The tv show is great, the books not so much. The tv show had a better plot (twins?) and I think it conveys dexter's mind better than the book.

- The Shawshank Redemption: The king novella is good but the film really fleshes out the world and the horror of prison better.

- Man on Fire: The book was written a while back and takes place in Italy, but the film has a much harder edge which makes me like it a lot more. There's more memorable dialogue in the film than any lines in the book.

Anything But Hockey / The hacking of twitter - great story
« on: July 21, 2009, 12:24:19 AM »
If you're not an IT wizard and you thought passwords were broken by computer program then think again:

Just to summarize the attack:

   1. HC accessed Gmail for a Twitter employee by using the password recovery feature that sends a reset link to a secondary email. In this case the secondary email was an expired Hotmail account, he simply registered it, clicked the link and reset the password. Gmail was then owned.
   2. HC then read emails to guess what the original Gmail password was successfully and reset the password so the Twitter employee would not notice the account had changed.
   3. HC then used the same password to access the employee’s Twitter email on Google Apps for your domain, getting access to a gold mine of sensitive company information from emails and, particularly, email attachments.
   4. HC then used this information along with additional password guesses and resets to take control of other Twitter employee personal and work emails.

Return of the lemaire.

Wow. Lemaire hockey is the exact way to bring them crowds back.

If i'm zajac and parise i'm suddenly hoping for a trade.

Kinda sad when a player makes your entire salary by playing just one game...

Wow it's popular on here. (It probably doesn't just belong in the gutter either :P )

William Shatner:

From the province in van:

That's right. The Phoenix Coyotes, whose bills are being paid by the NHL, felt free to expand their payroll by taking on an expensive Flames defenceman. That means the Flames now have the best chance to sign a player the Vancouver Canucks might liked to have signed, by off-loading a cap liability in Vandermeer to the Coyotes, a team whose bills are being paid partly by the Aquilini family through revenue sharing and most recently by league dues. By extension in Bettman's world, Vancouver Canuck fans therefore have helped finance a competitive disadvantage to their own team.

Anything But Hockey / New star trek movie
« on: May 10, 2009, 03:29:01 AM »
I saw it on Friday. I thought it was really well done. It did remind me a lot of the fun of the original star wars series with good jokes, some laddish behaviour and some good space visuals.

I also think it walks the line pretty well between pleasing the hard core fans and being accessible to people who've never seen the older stuff. I wouldn't call myself a trekkie, but I have seen most of the movies and seen episodes of the original series, next generation, voyager and enterprise and I think it was great, as it traded in some of the soap opera dullness of those with some action and good snappy dialogue.

It was a good way to forget about game 4 for sure.

Good thing he has nudie pics of colin campbell or else he'd actually get decent suspensions.

Great effort by carolina to silence boston and make it a 1-1 series.

I'm hoping carolina can pull off the upset myself.

General Hockey Discussions / Naslund retires
« on: May 04, 2009, 08:44:13 PM »
I give him credit for going when he realises he doesn't have it anymore.

In his prime he was a hell of a player. He was arguably the best sniper in the game for a few seasons, winning the pearson. With morrison and bertuzzi he formed the west coast express line which was one of the most exciting hockey lines of the past few years (at least in the regular season). He was never the same after he received an elbow to the head while going for a puck and the aftermath of that incident made him a more timid perimeter player. Still he was one of the best Canucks forwards ever and he was overall a pretty classy player. Should never have been made captain though..

It's my least favourite football code but congrats to Mike for being a trailblazer.

Well to all those experts who congratulated the flames on "winning" trade deadline for a do-over?

The Flames before draft day were going strong. Iggy and mike were clicking on the top line and they had plenty of depth to deal with injuries. Then Sutter deals aways depth defencemen and one of their best defensive centres in lombardi for a guy with a reputation for not being a team player. And Jokinen had maybe 4 good games for the flames.

The other aspect of the Jokinen deal was the cap room. Acquiring Jokinen's salary meant they didn't have the cap room down the stretch to dress full rosters and in doing so they practically conceded some games which allowed Vancouver to take the Division and chicago to get home ice.

Injuries hurt the flames in the playoffs sure, so did failing to get kipper a backup and some rest, but the Jokinen trade was the reason why they couldn't deal with it and he contributed nothing to pull them out of the slump, his arrival coincided with Ignilia slumping as well.

If I'm Calgary's owners I'd clear out both Keenan and Sutter.

Watching the highlights it seemed like marty had a good case to argue that he was bumped on those goals in game 4. Does seem like refs aren't calling much of what goes in the crease from the other series i've seen.

I picked carolina to win, but i think this one will def go to 7 games.

Game 1 goes to the ducks in a shutout.

Man do the Sharks sound like they are still playoff headcases.
