Not being from Ottawa, I won't be going in this pub, but if I was in Ottawa, I would be avoiding this place... :(

Anything But Hockey / American Kneejerk Reaction
« on: December 27, 2009, 06:12:16 PM »
Sorry Classmate, but this was just ridiculous...

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/article/743081---absolute-bedlam-on-pearson-s-busiest-day?bn=1#article

My wife and I were dropping our daughter off at the airport for her flight back to LA today.  She was home for Christmas, but had to get back to work.

We arrived in the short term parking garage at 07:00 this morning.  We usually park, then accompany her through baggage check, and say good bye when she enters US customs.

Her flight was for 09:25 this morning, and we left her lining up for US customs @ 16:30 this afternoon.  Leaving the short term parking cost us $87.00.  I just got a test message from her saying she was finally on board.

The Star article is pretty accurate for what we saw today.  It was absolute chaos!

Part of the article appears incorrect, though.  Looks like Air Canada is being diplomatic when they wouldn’t say the delays were due to the new US restrictions.  Every Air Canada person we talked to told us that was the ONLY reason for the massive delays.  There were normal delays for domestic and International flights, but those were due to this particular day.  The busiest day of the year for the airport.

The one carry on bag had to be a purse, laptop, or diaper bag.  Normal carry on bags with wheels had to be checked.  So, imagine people trying to re-pack things they needed to take on the plane.  This was going on all over terminal one.

Had US customs not demanded the ridiculous checking, there would have been normal delays for US flights.

If this was happening in Toronto, it must be happening in all airports all over the world.  I really can’t think how many people managed to get into the US today.  Must be very few.

All this security for one nut bar.  Seems to me to be a huge overkill by the US.

General Hockey Discussions / HNIC may drop Leafs nationally
« on: October 22, 2009, 03:19:30 PM »
The deeper the struggling team's slump gets and the greater the level of anger rises in Leafs Nation, the closer CBC executives will look at how many homes the team reaches on Canada's most-watched weekly sports program.

Maybe there's hope for more Sens games down here in the GTA.

You can tell it's a slow time of they year, down here in the GTA.  Leaf fans have found the solution to their hockey woes...

The logo – a 35-pointed maple leaf, with rounder edges than the current, 11-point leaf – graced the team's jerseys as they won nine Stanley Cups, before being replaced at the end of the 1967 regular season. The team hasn't won the Cup since.

And another, very humorous view of the situation...

Logos? The Leafs haven't won the Cup since 1967. Tinkering with logos is like buying new hubcaps for a car you totalled before the first moon landing.

Anything But Hockey / Bell Long Distance
« on: July 23, 2009, 11:43:00 AM »
Anybody use Bell for long distance?

We never have, but a call appears on my billl this month that I can't figure out who made it.  Don't know the person the number is assigned to, and can't think of anybody who was in our house on that evening.

This isn't a big issue...will probably come to me later...was only for 26 cents.  What burns me is a charge of $1.95 for "LD network connection fee".

I called Bell (guess which country I got).  They said it was a "fee" charged every month for the first long distance call made!!

I don't recall ever seeing a charge like this before, when I mistakenly didn't dial our Distributel number before making the long distance call!

What burns me more, is Bell just finished harrassing me to agree to their "Home Phone" plan, so I could get a $15.00 discount on my internet, and a $5.00 bundling discount.  They assured me that long distance calls were .05/minute and it would only cost me a buck more a month.

If they charge this every time, it looks like thatr first minute costs $0.40!!

Anybody else use their long distance services?

I think I would have to watch at least a couple of episodes.

The gimmick is to match up hockey players with figure skaters in pairs competition, voted off the program from week to week, à la Dancing With The Stars, a smash hit.

General Hockey Discussions / No More Shinny Hockey

It was supposed to be a carefree game of pickup hockey, but a wayward slap shot that hit a nine-year-old boy in the face will cost a family $44,000 after a ruling by a Quebec Superior Court judge.
