So what is going on with Michalek? I thought he made the trip and was supposed to come back today. Senschirp never even mentioned it in his pregame brief.

I despise afternoon games. They're always so listless and strange. The passes never connect on either side. Whichever team is less asleep seems to win. And we have another one tomorrow. Noon is a ridiculous hour for hockey.

Nice to see the Sens eke out a win against the Leafs. Man, these are hair-raising games. The Leafs just have a way... I never enjoy them. It's either a Leafs romp/shutout or the Sens barely pull of a win.

It does say a lot about Bingo, and just the system the entire organization currently has in place, that they're as resilient as they are. I still don't expect them to make the playoffs with their injuries. On paper they shouldn't. But you can't help but be charmed by their young guys and how hard they play.

These people coming up and plugging holes in their defense, like Greening said in his post game interview, deserve more credit than they're getting. It's a cast of no-names but their back end is remarkably stable.

Also all this talk about Alfie wanting to win the Stanley cup with another team??
INo way Alfie would do that  It just won't happen right??

I know. That segment was insulting just as a viewer. Forget being a Sens fan. To spend an entire segment speculating about a player being traded who no one is even whispering wants to go anywhere on a team currently sitting in a playoff spot.

Meanwhile, I honestly wonder why I watch hockey. If Anderson is out for the season I might seriously re-evaluate watching a sport where this can happen. Where an entire team can just drop like flies one after another.

Sens Talk / Re: Murray Press Conference at 11:00 a.m. Re: Jason Spezza

The chrome problem here was never solved, huh? That trips me up. I don't think he was hiding the injury. spezza seemed pretty eager when he came back to Ottawa. It sucks. This really should have been the transition year of the captaincy from Aflie to Spezza.

There's no getting around how bad it is. I think Turris is a questionable 2nd line center, and now with everybody targeting him, you wonder where the plays will come from. If there is one silver lining it's the fact that Ottawa is an offensive team from the defense out, i.e., Karlsson. It makes for unlikely heroes. That their offense really isn't generated by the forwards gaining the blue line, but by the passes from their own own blue line and fast break transitions into the other team's zone. You know, Jim O'brien has scored some important goals for this reason. The Sens have a way of finding unlikely heroes because of that mobile defense.

I can imagine the shortened season will be in Aflie's favor. They lost Cowen, however. And they haven't really added to their line-up. Can we expect Karlsson to repeat last season's numbers? Aside from the fact that everything will be crazy and unpredictable, and you never know in a shortened season like this, there's little reason to expect better than a first round exit.

I'm still excited for this season. People are bitter about the lockout, and I woulda been if they'd lost the whole season. But they didn't. I know the economics of a gate-driven league and all, but 48 games is more exciting than 82. This should be bonkers.

In terms of the contract I am only a little worried about his size because you never know how these things play out over the years. These smallish, fast, puck-moving defensemen are a somewhat new commodity in the NHL. I definitely would have made the deal. Don't get me wrong. But I think there is sort of a gamble based upon one season. I mean, Mike Green.

When it comes to maturity I have no doubts about Karlsson. Isn't he getting married this summer? You could easily argue he's too young to get married, but it goes to show to that he's serious about being an adult. He's from the Aflie school of appreciating how lucky he is.

You wouldn't happen to be an east-coaster, would you?

I am. But I was aware it was colloquial. I believe I've even mentioned the expression here before. I happen to think it's an elegant way to describe the emotions of a heartbreaking hockey game. Doesn't it feel like poison entering your system?

I was quite poisoned by the game and didn't even watch the last half a minute after the icing call. But I will draw attention to my having said that at least with the Rangers the Sens would have a graceful exit and still draw the highest pick among playoff teams. They will. 15tth overall. In the sober light of hindsight this wasn't a bad season at all.

Yeah those odd man rushes the Sens had in the 1st half of the game were terribly disjointed. Shoot Spezza! Shoot Alfredsson! Christ. A broken pass that quickly goes the other way. Its as though neither of these teams know how to play with a lead. I'm almost not sure if I want them to score the 1st goal in Game 7. It seems like whichever team gets the lead falls into a shell and the other team dictates the game from that point onward.

I love the fact that the Rags and their fans are so rankled by Neil. Yes, watch the right hand, pay no attention to what the left hand is doing. He's under their skin.

Yeah, has he looked at a replay? There is a world of difference between it and the Torres hit. There's not an expert I've heard that says they're comparable. Neil left his feet after the hit, not before, which is more a function of just how big Boyle is. That he bounced off to some degree. Nobody thinks it was late except Tortorella. The only controversy is contact with the head. And I still contend that Neil could not even make contact with Boyle's head with his shoulder on a lateral hit if his head wasn't down.

Yet I am worried because clearly Shanahan was making a statement with Torres' 25 game suspension today. He might feel boxed in and obligated to at least give Neil 1 game to appear consistent. It's bad timing, is all. And Tortorella is playing his hand as cynically as he could be.

I haven't seen a clear replay of the hit since but Ron Maclean deconstructed it in the segment with Cherry after the game. He said the hit wasn't late. 2.5 seconds, not 5.0. Neil didn't leave his feet. But that Neil did make contact with the head, although Boyle was leaning over kinda like Spezza was against Staal. Meanwhile Boyle is significantly taller than Neil. You'd think he'd have to be leading with his head.

As thrilled as I am I would probably say this was the least impressive game for the Sens of the last 4(excluding Anderson), but a lot of that is playing with a lead which they never had until this game. They weren't as aggressive or successful on the offensive zone forecheck, but again, they were playing with a lead.

It's bad karma to say this but don't look now, if the teams ahead in their respective series went on to win the Sens would draw the Panthers. Can you imagine?

Game 6 should be fantastic. I expect this to go 7 although the Rangers do show some troubling signs. They are not offensively dynamic enough to make up for the fact that they don't play a great shutdown game. Blocking shots and having a great goaltender only gets you so far.

Does Condra ever bury those? There have been so many high profile moments this season where Condra had a glorious chance and I don't remember him scoring on any of them. He's the last Senator I want with the game on his stick. The last.

Oh dear, absolutely thrilled by the victory. But I think I used up a life wish. I hope I'm never stranded at sea or anything. After those first few minutes of domination by the Rangers I saw the break up the ice and... well it went in. Improbable as it was. A great snapshot by Turris.

Outside of a few choice breakdowns I think the Sens have carried the majority of the play the last 3 games. That has to worry Rangers brass. The Sens seem to have little trouble winning faceoffs, or gaining the zone, or winning puck battles in the offensive end. They just can't seem to get 2nd chances on Lundqvist.

But that's just it, they bought the rights even though they might not be able to show it. TSN obviously would show it if they could. This is why it's coercive. It's the same thing they do on ordinary Saturdays. Buy multiple rights to games(exclusive typically) so other networks can't show other games and then only show them locally, so there's no competition for the flagship broadcast, i.e the Leafs.

I really want to emphasize this point: it's not CBC's duty to show the Bruins(or Sens in the regular season). But they should get out of the way if they aren't going to.

It's easy to shake Carkner's hand first when it all worked out for the best. But what if the Rags had scored 2 quick goals right off the bat? It was entirely possible. I liked what Carkner did too, mostly, although I think he may have been able to pick his spot better and at least avoid the suspension.

On a totally different subject... I'm glad CBC is showing the Sens game and all, but are they really just streaming Bruins/Caps online? That's awful. And people say what they do isn't coercive. Just because it happens to benefit the Sens here doesn't mean it's not.

I am really impressed by that win. Not that I have grand expectations about what the Sens will do this year, or that they'll even get by the Rags, but the way they won that playoff game is something I haven't seen from them... well, since the lockout. Maybe ever. They grinded that one out, that's for sure.

And Chris Neil, what can you say? He may be the most all-around useful bottom 6 guy in the league. The epitome of a heart and soul player. He deserves recognition.

Spoke too soon, although it took a freak bounce off Del Zotto's skate to get one by him. Nice hustle by Karlsson though. Good to be lucky.

You didn't even mention the 5 minute major. The game coulda been over right there. Considering the Sens haven't scored a meaningful goal on Lundqvist. There has to be a better way to send a message.

Meanwhile, I find Bob Cole irrationally annoying to listen to.
