This is true.

He's making millions... why doesn't he just buy his own plant?

Pfft, he's a good Canadian boy... he should take a canoe trip through the Gonq and whittle himself a stock of them

Sens Talk / Re: Are the sens even contenders this coming year?

I expect Montreal to make the playoffs, but I don't expect to see them go far

As for Ottawa, I think we'll be in a tougher fight for a spot than we've had for a while... we still should be in, though, and if we're not, I'd expect to see some very big moves next summer...

It would be a pleasant surprise if we got home ice advantage, and I'd say it's not unreasonable to think that we could challenge for the division... frankly, I think the Flyers are the strongest team in the East, though it kills me inside to say it... I also think Carolina could surprise a lot of people... I won't go so far as to say they'll make the playoffs, but I will say they'll finish no lower than second in their division.

Polls, Polls, Polls, What Sayeth You / Re: This is whats wrong with ottawa
« on: September 02, 2008, 11:34:56 PM »
What is wrong with this city is that there are too many people who run to the newspapers and then the newspapers make the whining and complaining into "a story"!  Seriously.  Do cities of any and all sizes not get complaints on a regular basis about noise, etc?  Why do the Sun and the Citizen run with this muck?  How many people live downtown and how many complained?  I know lots of people who live downtown and they LIVE for Bluesfest...they buy tickets the nights they really want to go and the others, they sit on their apartment balconies and listen from a distance.  Gee....think if THEY called the newspapers and said that, THAT would get in as "a story".  Nope.

A couple of years ago, the papers ran with the "fights" between the sitters and the standees.  Guess there was not much whining about that this year, so they called the local councillor who put them in touch with the "noise" complainers.

Can't sell one's house because of Bluesfest?  I doubt it.  More likely, the house is a dump!!

that's it, you've won my vote for mayor!!!

General Hockey Discussions / Re: Hasek thinking about returning.... Again.

Geez, retire already.

he has, twice already, didn't you read it :)

In fact, I think he keeps returning because he loves retiring a little too much

It'd be a real shame to lose Bingo as an affiliate...
Of course, for the big team, the main role of the AHL team is to develop young players... but really, which environment do you think best fosters the development? One in which they finish dead last and the prospects get tons of ice time but hung out to dry on every shift or one in which they get moderate amounts of ice time and play shoulder to shoulder with veterans in a winning environment? You need to teach the kids not just to play, but to win, and this usually starts at the AHL level (actually it starts well before, but in the professional ranks at the AHL)

As far as moxie's assertion that Ottawa barely deserves an NHL franchise, I don't think the city would walk on the team after a few losing seasons, now that they are firmly implanted in the city's identity... i don't know where that came from... I agree with most of what you said, and certainly anyone who undervalues the importance of a healthy AHL affiliation is completely ignorant about the off-ice workings of the game, and if you've watched the AHL, it is very exciting hockey, but I do take some offence at the notion that our city is 'pathetic'... sure, there are stupid fans, those exist everywhere, I'm sure in Bingo, too... frankly any bar talk, and i didn't really hear much, i think was a simply due to people being at a loss of what else to point the finger at while the team was inexplicably sliding... i couldn't care less how many jack n cokes a player drinks, who he sleeps with, or what kind of fender benders a player gets in on his days off as long as he's ready to play come game time, and most players on most nights for much of last season were not...

Perhaps we shouldn't take someone named Alexander_Ovechkin as representative of Senators fans

He's actually a Right Winger
who can also play centre

This is from hockeysfuture.com:
"While he may be small, Shannon is durable, tenacious and works hard. He is smart and possesses great on-ice vision. He is an excellent skater with very good speed who moves well through traffic."

Sound like a theme is developing here?

I wonder if Murray's thinking (hoping?) he can step up and be that top six guy... he's show that kind of potential in the past, but has yet to really get going at the nhl level...

he did have 13 points in 27 games last season, though, which would be a translate into a respectable first year if he could sustain over a full season, and remember, this is on the offensively challenged Nucks... I don't think he played much with the Sundin twins (oops, freudian slip), which means they can't all be fluke points... 27 games does not a career make, but perhaps if he had Vermette to set up while Fisher cleans a path for him ??? who knows

and, as someone said, at the very worst, this provides Bingo with a likely top level AHL scorer

I don't see a down side, good work Bryan  :ccclapping:

EDIT:
Apparently Spector is thinking the same

holy... anyone see this one...

I like it a lot, but do i need to bring up the inevitable comparisons of that 'O' to a '0'... i mean, to some extent who cares what insults the opposition hurls, but do we really want to invite it??

Oh and I have tons of faith that Elliott will be in Ottawa next season.  Having spoken with him personally last season and heard about his summer training just recently, that boy is committed.  And damn good too, IMHO.

(man I hope I don't have to eat those words  :icon_hiding2:)

I thought that was the plan, but with Auld under contract for 2 years, I'm not so sure... I really hope we're not planning on an Auld-Elliott tandem next year...

poor Auld, he keeps being brought in to play backup and then getting booted from that role

lol about the Dustin Brown trade... now i see how these unbelievable rumours get started  :D   So how about Nycholat + SJ 1st rounder for Nicklas Backstrom (WAS)? (e1) (oh wait, i just mentioned it to my friend and he repeated it back to me, it's now e2)

Yes we will most definitely need a goalie however I'm not sure I'm liking the list of free agent goalies next summer

You forgot Ray Emery :)

Yes, not the most inspiring list... but there really aren't many goalies better than the list likely to be available via trade in the near future either...

Actually, re-reading that list, if Niklas Backstrom were available, I would gladly take him! His availability will probably depend on Harding's season

otherwise, it may well be that resigning Gerber is the best option, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, IMO, depends how he does this season, i guess

It doesn't have to be one or the other. Sign a player like Shanahan to a 1 year contract, and you'll still have your cap space next summer.

no, i know, that's what i was getting at, sorry re-reading i didn't express that well, i just mean i'd rather he go the FA route, so we have room next summer than make a trade... of course if the trade knocked my socks off, like that Schubert + SJ pick for D. Brown (E4 now :D), well I could change my mind...

Sens Talk / Re: Andrej Meszaros traded to Tampa Bay
« on: August 31, 2008, 06:24:26 PM »
Seeing the signing now, and the way it breaks down, makes me question Meszaros' intent. As I understand, he could have got a 2.5-3 million dollar contract for the next 2 years here, which is pretty close to what he'll get anyway...

at that point, if he played up to what he apparently thinks he's worth, he stood to get a big raise (of course, if he didn't develop, he wouldn't get that raise)... instead he goes for the full contract that means he really doesn't need to play to potential for another 5 seasons...

is that an insight into his character?
or maybe his agent thinks he's peaked...?

Sens Talk / Re: Andrej Meszaros
« on: August 30, 2008, 11:05:34 PM »
It did

almost, but not really what they said... the pick was never dealt back to Tampa, and tsn reports have put the signing at closer to 4 mil than the 5 that was suggested

sorry for breaking gossip everyone... how sweet would that have been, though, 2 first round picks for the next 2 years... i couldn't hold in my anticipation

Sens Talk / Re: Who's Next
« on: August 30, 2008, 10:58:29 PM »
I don't think we have that much... by my calculations we have about 5 million total, if we dress the minimum number of players... that should be enough to sign, say, Glen Murray or Mark Parrish, and keep the buffer zone... far as I know, those two and Brendan Shanahan are the only "second liners" left on the market (and i'm not sure which if any still qualify as that)

I don't know of anyone who fits that bill who would be on the trade market at this point in the season... maybe around halfway through, we might be able to get that elusive second line guy... there's no doubt Murray's got his ear open

personally, i wouldn't mind seeing us leave some space available for next summer so we can put ourselves in the Bouwmeester sweepstakes of the deadline/offseason... i'm not sure i'd want to pay what he might command on the open market, but if we were able to bring him in at the deadline, we could maybe get him to sign on for less...

oh yeah, more importantly, we'll need cap space for a goalie

By some of these comments, I have to think that the TB management talking points in the local press/media is where they are getting most of their information.  Calling Meszaros a defensive "stud" is something that poster either heard somewhere else or he doesn't know much about defensive play, IMHO.

Yeah...he handles the puck really well.....in practice! :shake:

more than that, I was reading some tampa boards in the hours after the trade, and a number of people commented on his great physical play as well as the defensive ability.... what what what????   :icon_fryingpan:   are they mixing up andrej with anton?

Sure, he's got the offensive upside, but just watch that plus/minus turn into a big minus on a defensively porous Tampa squad

Wow, those fans must never have seen Meszaros over the last 2 years.  :A_laughing_matter:

Well, remember, the last time they would have seen Meszaros over several games.... 06 playoffs, 2 and 1/2 years ago, his rookie year... maybe they haven't kept current  :suspicious

This is my favourite part of that post:

*Jay Bouwmeester rumours once again. Yes indeed! I was told this past hour, on VERY good authority, that Jay would be a Panther to start the year. from my source: "Something may have happened with Toronto that has brought Jay back into play"

Whatchoo talkin' 'bout Eklund??

it's been widely reported that there's a deal that's already been agreed upon by Mesz and TB

I guess we'll find out how true that was, pretty soon
