Sens Talk / My Top Backup Goalies For 2005/06
« on: September 06, 2005, 12:58:15 PM »
Here is a list of the top backup goalies for 2005/06. My results come from career consistency, recent performance, and just from watching them play. All my selections are unbiasely chosen.

#1) Martin Prusek
#2) Manny Fernandez
#3) Vesa Toskala
#4)Jussi Markannen
#5) Mika Noronen
#6) Sean Burke
#7) Johan Hedberg
#8] Jamie McLennan
#9) Sebastien Caron
#10)Brian Boucher
#11)Scott Clemmenson
#12)Jamie Storr
#13)Christobal Huet
#14)Alex Auld
#15)Ray Emery
#16)Reinhard Divis
#17)Cam Ward
#18)Brent Johnson
#19)JS Aubin
#20)Phillipe Sauve
#21)Maxime Ouellet
#22)Chris Mason
#23)Michael Leighton
#24)Garth Snow
#25)Ilya Bryzgalov, Antero Niitymaki

Please remember that some young rookie backups are not on the list yet because I really can't say how they will perform in the NHL without seeing them in any games at that level. There is however no doubt in my mind that guys like Henrik Lundqvist and Hannu Toivonen and Budaj will be on that list by the midway point of the sesason.

I also left off Mike Dunham/Kari Lehtonen, Garon/LaBarbera, and Chris Osgood/Manny Legace, as none could be determined an undisputed starter or backup yet.

Sens Talk / My Top 30 Goaltenders for 2006

I ranked my goalies on recent performance, playoff performance, career consistency and injury prone or not.

Roberto Luongo has played successfully in the World Cup, the Olympics and Canadian Junior teams, plus has had success with Florida which is why I gave him the #2 nod. Marc Denis, does have potential, but I am not yet ready to give him a top ten ranking.

Jocelyn Thibault would be a lot higher if it weren't for his long term injury in 2004. He also has had no recent playoff appearences, and his career stats are trendy, having their up and downs. Which in turn means a lack of overall consistency. I do have a feeling at midseason when I revise my list, he will be in the top 10.

Yes I did, that is why Thibault is so underrated on the list.

I based it on recent performance (ie SVP, wins, GAA, SO) career consistency, and playoff performances.

Here is a list of my top 30 goaltenders of 2006. I've based my ranks on recent play and career consistency. A lot of guys like Kari Lehtonen, Ray Emery and Jocelyn Thibault are underrated only because of little recent NHL success. I have no doubt in my mind that if I revise the list at the midway point in the season Thibault will be in the top 10 and Garon and Lehtonen will make the list.

You might notice a big revision of my tops in my list. Kiprusoff took the biggest hit as I decided that his performance in 03/04 was amazing, but he will have to put up decent numbers this year to show that he's for real to me.

In no way am I suggesting that these results are accurate or correct

Sens Talk / Sens Should Pick Up Tugnutt
« on: September 04, 2005, 08:28:47 PM »
If Ottawa kept Tugnutt untill the end of his contract instead of trading him for Barrasso, I think Ottawa would've won the cup that year. Tugnutt was on fire with the Pens and Ottawa was a much better team then Pittsburgh.

If only..

Is that a real site or some form of sarcasm, because I'd like to check it out if it is and the URL journeymanygoalie.com didn't work.

You call a 2-4-0 record with 2.58 GAA and .905SVP with 0 shutouts a good performance in the playoffs for Barrasso? That compared to Tugnutt's 6-5-0 record with a 1.76 GAA,  .945 SVP% and 3 shutouts?

I would also argue that Barrasso's record compared to Joseph's 6-6-0, 2.05 GAA, .932 SVP%, and 1 shutout about who was the better performer in That series.

I would say Tugnutt played beyond exceptional for the Pens and Barrasso played mediocre for Ottawa.

Yes you're right he was traded because the Sens wanted an experienced goaltender for the playoffs. Boy did Tugnutt ever show up the Sens. Barrasso was horrible and Ottawa got knocked out the first round, meanwhile Tugnutt played amazing with Pittsburgh going 9-13-0 in the playoffs with a 1.76 GAA and .926 SVP and 3 shutouts!

Maybe its Emery's turn to do that in Ottawa's favour!

IMO..Ottawa could use more of a grinder over another playmaker.

Video games have nothing to do with the several other examples I showed to prove that he isn't retired.

Well in all his 'Player Profiles' like at the score.ca and tsn.ca, espn.com etc. they have him listed as an UNrestricted Free Agent. In fact at thescore.ca they have an article called 'Best of the Rest' and Tugnutt is listed as the best available goaltender currently on the market. He is also listed as a waiver on NHL 2006, the videogame.

Also, according to an archived article at atlantathrashers.com ... Tugnutt and his agent Pat Morris were very much involved in talks before Atlanta went with Dunham for a goaltender instead.

By the way, I heard that report of Tugnutt maybe retiring back in January of 2004 when he was sent down to the AHL to play some games and make sure he had fully recovered from his groin injury. However the report quickly faded when he got recalled and played 6 more games to finish the season  going 2-2-0-2 with 1 shutout.

So I'm pretty sure he is looking for work.

Ottawa's goaltending depth does not look that great going into 2005/06. Hasek is really old and Emery is unproven. I think it would be an excellent idea to pick up Tugnutt for a year or two deal.

First of all he currently lives in Ottawa, secondly he's 37 so he could stay in
Ottawa for a year or two and then retire here. By that time Emery should be ready to play in the NHL. I doubt Emery will get better by sitting on the bench all year watching Hasek play. He's better off in the AHL again. Tugnutt had a bad year in 2003-04 as he struggled with a knee injury, however he isn't known to be injury prone and played excellent when he filled in for Turco's four game suspension in 03/04. I would expect Tugnutt
to accept a cheap offer if the Sens were to give him one.

With over 500 games of NHL experience, not to mention that most of his success has been with Ottawa in the past, I think Tugnutt would make for an exceptional back-up and insurance marker for Hasek.

Other goalies left on the market include Felix Potvin and Byron Dafoe. Both 34 years old.
