Nowadays, yes. But back then, I don't think the suffixes were assigned by country quite yet, especially not the first one ever. [/size]

Actually these ISO country codes were made part of ISO 3166 in 1974 and were widely used in other applications before the internet and world wide web were developed.  After the advent of the internet 3166 was divided into three parts and now part 3166-1 contains these codes.   They became widely published in 1997, before that you had to know where to look.

The fact I know this and remember having to write to the ISO to get updated copies prior to 1997 makes me somewhat dated.

Seeing that first web site again is definitely a trip down memory lane.

GAMEDAY FORUM / Re: Gameday Thread - Round 2: Sens vs Pens
« on: May 14, 2013, 03:00:01 PM »
Game four in the first round Ottawa won the game by only showing up for the third period, they were brutal for the first forty minutes.  If they don't show up for all sixty minutes in every game the Penguins will bury them.  If Ottawa brings their best game for the full sixty minutes and they get better goaltending, then the Penguins can be beaten.

As for 'that little prick Cooke' the best revenge would be winning the series and sending the Penguins golfing.  If Cooke gets creamed by a big hit along the way, well that would just be a nice little bonus.

As for Spezza, until he is in good enough game shape to help the team he should stay in Ottawa and work on his rehab.

Bogus interference call, bogus suspension.  But on to more important things.

Eller was released from hospital this morning.
Ottawa leads the series 1-0 and has the opportunity to put Montreal in a deep hole by winning game two tonight.

Sens Talk / Re: Time to move Anderson..
« on: February 14, 2013, 06:30:45 PM »
With their two best players out Ottawa's goal tending is going to get shelled for the next while.  Leave Lehner in Bingo for now and let a veteran who won't get their confidence shattered by that shelling take the brunt of it.

The time to move a goalie is at the deadline or at the draft.   I expect that will either be Bishop (if he is not going to sign his qualifying offer) or Anderson.  Either way I expect Lehner will be in Ottawa next year looking to prove that he deserves a one way deal for his next contract.

Wanting to make a knee jerk trade because of the Karlsson and Spezza injuries is not dealing from a position of strength.  No matter which goalie they try to deal, other GM's will not make top offers for these guys right now if they think Murray is make a deal out of desperation.

The Senators finally have solid goal tending and depth at the position, let's not mess up a good thing that Senators fans have waited so long to be able to say.

Sens Talk / Re: Matt Cooke won’t be suspended for hit on Erik Karlsson
« on: February 14, 2013, 06:20:24 PM »

Sasquatch I have to disagree. Watch the way Cooke straightens his knee to drive his skate down into Karlsson's calf.  That to me is the difference between the slew foot by Subban and the play last night.  The slew foot is a sweeping motion to knock the guys legs out from behind (still a dirty and dangerous play).  Cooke does not try to sweep Karlsson's feet out, he straightens his knee to stomp the skate blade down into Karlsson's calf.  When I used to referee that was defined as a distinct kicking motion and would have drawn a match penalty.

Much has been made in the press about Cooke looking away so it couldn't have been deliberate. Anyone who skates well knows that you do not have to be looking at something to direct your skate that way.  Maybe it's because so few of these TV bobble heads actually skate well that they think where he was looking is relevant. Or maybe it's because Cooke has supposedly cleaned up his act they are all jumping in to defend him.  To me it's just another star player taken out by a cheap shot from the dirtiest player in the league.

As long as teams can take liberties like this with Ottawa's star players with no fear of retribution, we will see more injuries to Ottawa's best players.  Don't know about anyone else, but I miss Carkner and Konopka in Senators uniforms a little more today than I did yesterday.

I agree that not all 6 can be flashy puck movers back there, those solid steady guys you don't notice are important too.  I Lundin is one of those he may make a good partner for Gonchar.

According to TSN Mike Lundin makes his debut with the Senators tonight vs. Carolina.  He will be paired with Gonchar.

Agree about Camara's hit, shouldn't have even been a penalty.  I'll be surprised if Lipon isn't suspended for at least two games.

Good come back win today, but if they have these lapses against the Russians or American's they'll have a much tougher time pulling out a win.

Best part of watching live at 4:30 is not having to avoid the results if you want to watch the rebroadcast  8)

That and can you ever got a lot done around the house when you start your day that early and don't have to go to work.

Wouldn't that be next century Rose?  12-12-2112 will still be abbreviated as 12-12-12.

But on topic, Alfie turning 40 makes me think that this will be his last season (if there is a season).

According to the article at the link below agents in Europe are talking about teams preparing to lose their NHL players as early as next week.

Maybe a glimmer of hope that they will save the season?

I'll be up at 04:00 to watch them live.
The hard part will be remembering not to cheer to loud so I don't wake my wife up.

A STUNNING SENIOR MOMENT

A self important college freshman walking along the beach took it upon himself to explain to a senior citizen resting on the steps why it was impossible for the older generation to understand his generation.  "You grew up in a different world, actually an almost primitive one" the young student said loud enough for others to hear.  "The young people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, man walking on the moon.  We have nuclear energy, ships and cell phones, computers with light speed ... and many more."

After a brief silence, the senior citizen responded as follows.

"you're right son.  We didn't have those things when we were young ... so we invented them.  Now, you arrogant little shit what are you going to do for the next generation?"

The applause was amazing!

Gretzky is optimistic there will be a season.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=406504

I'm sticking to January 1 and the winter classic as my start date.

So many other good comments here:

@MH:  Like the idea, but from what I understand having salaries escalate back is exactly what the owners want to prevent with the new CBA.

@Rose:  Would love to see them legislated back to work.  Still baffles me why the millionaires need a players association that acts like it wants to be a union.  Until of course it's best payed members sign in Europe to play for a fraction of what they get paid in the NHL, then any signs of "union solidarity' are quickly abandoned.

@Jasonf6:  Excellent point about the CAW and the auto makers negotiations going to marathon sessions as the deadline was reached and passed.  That's how compromises get hammered out and deals reached.

@CrustyOldGuy:  Shame about the layoffs starting already.  Those are the people that really get hurt in all of this.

In general, I'm getting to the point where I really don't care when the NHL come back.  Thinking about doign a tour of OHL cities (starting with the five that are within a 90 minute drive of my house).  Maybe I'll pay attention to the NHL again when I have been to every OHL city.  Or maybe I'll start on a tour of the Q and the WHL after that.  Either way, this hockey fan will watch hockey this year (starting this month).

I don't know MH.  With NBC showing the playoffs in every US household last year and the ratings being good, I think it will do to much damage in the US if they lose the entire season.  My feeling is that the US owners could care less if hockey is played until the NFL season is over, but after that they will make a deal to save the season.

Not sure I care any more.  There are five OHL teams within an hours drive of where I live and that's where my hockey dollars will get spent.

I'm picking option 5.  I don't think they will want to tarnish this event by having to cancel it, but I don't think that they will get a deal done before then.

Pilots not qualified and only flying because of falsified documents  :shake:

Sad that an entire hockey team had to die one year ago today because the Russians don't have their shit together enough to make sure pilots are actually qualified to fly the planes they are in.
