General Hockey Discussions / Re: 2011/12 NHL general chat

Sorry, you really lost me with your arrogant reply to me and COG's attempt to peacefully and maturely end a political discussion that was obviously going nowhere by suggesting we did it because we were beat.

I just find it hard to tell when you are trying to be funny or are just being a complete jerk.

Ha. I forgot, arrogant replies and being a jerk is your schtick. Your last post in the thread to which you refer is a case in point, although I do believe that you're actually deluded enough to think that it was an attempt to "peacefully and maturely end a political discussion".

Honestly, I've had enough of you. You're a tool. It's a shame, because I like this board but I'm done with it because your attitude is inescapable. Congratulations, you win.

I apologise, I should have remembered that you have no sense of humour.

I think at this point I'd like to quote one of your previous posts.

This is the kind of crap the Toronto Star is trying to pass off as journalism.  From the horrible picture to the meaningless story from a nothing source.

No, but he appears to be a bloody good coach who understands how to effectively blend a strong youth/prospect system with experienced veterans to get the most out of both.

For me, the biggest achievement of his hasn't been the blooding of the young guns or the performance of the vets like Alfie and Gonchar, although both have been achieved commendably well. It's the fact that he seems to be getting mercurial players in their prime like Spezza, Michalek and Foligno to consistently produce the best hockey I think I've ever seen any of them play.

The longer this season goes on the better this team is getting. I'm really, really enjoying watching this side play at a level way beyond anything that I dared hope for this season.

Big props to Kyle Turris. I thought he was superb last night and at the centre of so many good things that the Sens did.

The Rags didn't play the way they have been of late, though. They looked like they expected to just get the win by turning up. Hank dropping the puck between his knees for Spezza to push into the goal was most unlike him, and reflected their performance overall.

Is it just me or do they (Sportsnet in this case in NY) not tell ya when someone is on the PP?  Usually under the team name is a red bar or something; not in this case.

That was annoying me intensely. Thankfully, the wholly unexpected win helped me get over it.

You said that what his advisors actually said wasn't what they actually meant and then told us what they were really thinking.  :shake:  How can we possibly discuss anything when that's the type of argument you reply with?

It's a passable attempt at a straw man, but no more than that. Certainly not good enough to deflect from the essential logic.

Sorry to have bored you so much. I'm happy talking to myself on the topic, feel free to not respond.

I put your posts through an online translator, it came out with, "Bugger, looks like he might actually have a point that I can't actually answer with right wing paranoia and rhetoric. Better deploy the ennui defence and back out."

Sure guys, let's agree to disagree.

Surplus = reduction of debt, we can agree on that, can we not?

Rob Ford has justified swingeing cuts on the basis that the debt needs to be cut.

2011 Surplus = the result of the the land transfer tax.

Rob Ford has stated that he intends to remove the land transfer tax, and therefore by definition remove the budget surplus.

Therefore, he intends to finance a tax break for the wealthy by cutting public services when he could leave the public services alone and reduce the debt by leaving the tax well alone.

Again, I would remind you that I say this as a property owner in Toronto. The fact that he is attempting to spin the accidental surplus as some kind of act of huge largesse on his behalf is rampant politicking and designed to cover up the fact that his agenda is solely to feather the nests of those least in need of feathering.

"Both cuts were recommended in the 2012 budget Mayor Rob Ford introduced in November. His advisers say he was never comfortable with the proposed cuts and was pushing staff to come up with a plan to forgo them.
The mayor endorsed the new scheme and thanked all involved “for their hard work over the holiday break.”
“We asked them to find a way to protect funding,” he added in a short statement. “I’m very pleased to say they succeeded.”"

Good Lord!!!  The man sounds like he's completely out of control!!  LOL  They really need to do something about this lunatic!

What would you expect "his advisers" to say?

"Frankly, the guy was and is hellbent on cutting everything he can from the public service in order to finance the removal of the taxes that irk his wealthy buddies so much, but unfortunately we've had this surplus fall in our laps and politically we're going to get hammered if we don't chuck a scrap from the table."

It would be considerably more truthful, but not exactly expedient.

If I had a huge debt, and won a few grand in the lottery, I think I would put it against the debt, instead of using it to cover more of the same spending that put me in the hole in the first place.

Me too. So explain then why Ford wants to cut the land transfer tax that is contributing so significantly to the city's budget.

Really?  According to the same paper that you've been posting links to, Toronto is $4.4 billion in debt.

You should probably go and look up the difference between deficit and debt.

Source?

Quote
The staff report actually suggests the surplus will be closer to $174-million, but recommends dedicating $20-million of it to the city’s recent buyout program.

...........

Mr. Del Grande also hinted that the city will need cash for another as-yet-unannounced round of buyouts. “That program is not over yet,” he said of the $20-million going toward the city’s voluntary separation program. “There’s more to the picture than that.”

That well known pinko propaganda rag The Globe and Mail.

Never called you a leftie and I think he's a bit of an a-hole too.  But the fact remains, you can't continue to operate a city like Toronto has been doing.

When my boss tells me we are having budget issues and I need to cut back on spending, I do it.  I try to find ways that don't disrupt service and saves jobs.  As an example libraries.  Why don't the library board try to do something to help the problem?  What's wrong with a small charge for DVD borrowing or shorten the weekend hours by an hour?  That's what good managers do.  They come up with solutions.

Just as a point of note, the City is running at a significant surplus. Ford has earmarked an amount of that surplus to pay for more cuts next year.

Can you not see the perversity in that?

Poor guy? The mayor of Toronto has had the police called to his house several times by his wife. On Christmas Day they were called because he was drunk and abusive. He called the police to rescue him from the media. He was caught talking on his mobile when driving, and then gave the finger to a citizen who challenged his behaviour. This isn't an attack by the Toronto Star, it's a statement of events.

The guy is not fit to be in charge of a domestic pet, never mind a city of ten million people. He is an embarrassment as a politician and as a human being. He is also the best ambassador for the centre and left there could possibly be, no matter who the right puts up next time they're losing by a landslide because of Ford's incredible behaviour. He's a complete yobbo hellbent on destruction to serve his own agenda, and he doesn't give a shit about you, me or anyone else who pays taxes in Toronto.

The guy should face a vote of no confidence - his own councillors would vote against him right now. You've got your head in the clouds if you can't see that.

Sens Talk / Re: .900 reasons Craig Anderson needs to be better
« on: December 30, 2011, 11:11:22 AM »
Playoffs would be nice this season, but they weren't the point at the outset and they aren't the point now. More important that Anderson develops his consistency, that he builds his on-ice relationship with the blueliners in front of him, and that the team as a whole starts to create a cohesive mindset that includes a better forechecking game.

We can't keep throwing out goaltenders once a year and starting again. No, he isn't Roy or Brodeur, but he's a good enough goalie that we can stick with him and support him for a while as the team grows and develops. Consistency is key right now, not chasing an extra round of games at the end of the season.

That's a shame, I love watching him play when he's on form - but as has been said, we can't rely on a player who can't rely on his own body.
