General Hockey Discussions / Graham James pleads guilty
« on: December 07, 2011, 02:41:25 PM »
Wasn't even aware his trial had started, but he has entered a guilty plea...

WINNIPEG - Former junior hockey coach and convicted sex offender Graham James has pleaded guilty to sexual assaults involving two of his former players, including NHL star Theoren Fleury.

James entered the plea in a Winnipeg courtroom via video link from Montreal.

The disgraced coach was facing nine charges of sexual assault on three players, but only pleaded guilty to charges involving two.

James has been out on bail for almost a year and living in Montreal.

He has already served a 3 1/2-year prison sentence for abusing other former players he coached, including former NHLer Sheldon Kennedy.

The most recent charges came after Fleury published an autobiography in which he described the abuse he suffered.

Here's hoping he goes away for a long time.  There's probably a deal that's been made here, but I really hope it wasn't too sweet.

General Hockey Discussions / Markham? Maybe.
« on: November 23, 2011, 09:41:10 AM »

Why it seems it was just yesterday (picture everything getting wavy like a flashback on 80s sitcoms)...

You can place a team in the GTA and have it outside the Sabres area, so that can be worked around.  (*cough!* Markham).  Now you've only got one team fighting it.  And with pressure from 28 owners, plus enough dollars, it can be done.

And lo and behold...

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/a-new-nhl-ready-arena-in-the-gta/article2245955/

Now of course we're talking about a building that there isn't even permission given to even break ground, let alone play NHL hockey there, but let the discussion begin!

There's some credible people putting some dollars in here so I don't think you can dismiss it out of hand.  Sure MLSE will have something to say about it but they get no say in the building of an arena and I still maintain a deal can be made.

Get cracking and maybe them and Quebec can hold a mini-draft of Coyote and Islander players.

Sens Talk / Senators sign Mark Parrish
« on: July 08, 2011, 10:44:24 AM »
1-year 2-way deal.

I assume he'll be spending most of his time in Binghamton.  That's a pretty experienced guy to send there.

Sens Talk / Clouston out as head coach.
« on: April 09, 2011, 08:02:33 PM »
Clouston is done as of today.  Assistants Greg Carvel and Brad Lauer out as well.  Luke Richardson and Rick Walmsley will remain.

I'll get this started now:  Bob Hartley please!

Sens Talk / All right. Let's do this.
« on: December 08, 2010, 10:52:41 AM »
The team is dreadful.  Their scoring non-existent, the defense soft and a system thin on prospects.  It's been a good run but eventually it comes to an end.

It's time to put this dog down.

The news isn't all bad:
Sens currently sit in 24th.  That's a lottery pick!  But the news is better: While 29th and 30th look out of reach, all the teams from 25th to 28th are 2 or fewer points behind, and they all have games in hand!

We could be 28th by Saturday!

Come on Leafs, you can do it! Beat them Pens and pull into a tie.  Carolina, Edmonton, Florida...go get 'em!  :ccclapping:

Who's with me?!?

Other Sports Talk / NFL 2010 Season

It's a new season. I'm starting a new thread.

To kick things off, you can look at a quick summary of your favourite team in the Onion NFL preview!

General Hockey Discussions / 2010 Off-season moves
« on: June 21, 2010, 09:50:30 AM »
Looks like we need a thread since the Halak deal seems to have got things moving.

Preds deal UFA Dan Hamuis for Ryan Parent and a conditional pick.  Flyers really only get negotiating rights like they did with Timonen and Hartnell.  Parent was a Nashville pick that went to the Flyers in the Forsberg deal.

The relationship between these teams is starting to look a little too cosy.  There's nothing illegal about the deals themselves, but I can't help but feel there's another deal going on the side ($$$?)

Then they send off Arnott to the Devils.  Is the rebuild on?  Was there ever anything to rebuild?

Other Sports Talk / The lamest banners ever raised
« on: March 03, 2010, 09:17:10 AM »
Now if you're a storied club like the Habs, or Leafs, or Yankees, or the Celtics your rafters are filled with championship banners and the numbers of legendary Hall-of-Famers.  For these clubs, only a championship makes the grade.

Get away from those and the standard starts to drop as team celebrate getting past the second round.  Or l;ike the Raptors, who proudly hung their 'Regular Season Division Champions' banner from the rafters of ACC.

But can the standard get lower? Apparently it can:

General Hockey Discussions / The Ilya Kovalchuk watch
« on: February 03, 2010, 03:47:53 PM »
The media is in a tizzy that Ilya Kovalchuk will be on the move soon.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=308800

So here's the thread.  I'm really not sure where he's going.  The Rangers always show up in these rumours, and supposedly the Blackhawks and Bruins are also front runners.

The 'Hawks have young talent to burn they could probably make a really good offer to the Thrashers.  The Bruins are desperate for offence after injuries exposed just how paper thin they are up front.

I suspect whoever trades for him already has an agreement in principal to sign and extension.

Of course keep in mind that Don Waddel is being trusted to make this deal.  Someone I would but in the bottom third of the league's GMs.

So let's speculate until it gets done!

So you may have seen them at various sporting events (NHL included).  Fans playfully bouncing them around through the stands.  And if you're like me you may wonder 'I wonder what would happen if one gets onto the field/rink/court.

Well, you could get this.

Steve Bartman feels your pain young man.

Polls, Polls, Polls, What Sayeth You / Pascal LeClaire
« on: September 29, 2009, 02:46:41 AM »
Since our season pretty much hangs on how he'll play, here's the poll.

Personally, I voted 'Solid'.  I think he's going to be fine.  Of course his ankles could blow up and then we're pretty much screwed.

General Hockey Discussions / Jermey Roenick retires
« on: August 07, 2009, 10:07:35 AM »
20 Season, 513 Goals, 703 assists.  Hell of a career.

Roenick was a guy I originally hated but grew to like over the years.

Love him or hate him, he certainly brought some personality to the league without degenerating into Avery type antics.

I'm sure well see him on TV somewhere soon.  He's definitely suited for it.

General Hockey Discussions / Rangers walk away from Zherdev
« on: August 05, 2009, 09:23:39 AM »
What going on with Sather? He's starting to do sensible things.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=286726

I see the KHL in his future.

I'd have to count Zherdev and Dan Fritsche for Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman as one of the worst trades in the cap era.

Oh yeah...Murray? Don't even think about it!

General Hockey Discussions / NHL Free Agency 2009
« on: June 30, 2009, 02:29:57 PM »
I've made a new thread for the next NHL bonanza - Free agency!  Is it a coincidence it happens on Canada Day? I don't think so.

So many questions!

If not Calgary, who will overpay for Jay Bouwmeester?

Who is Marian Hossa's pick to win the 2010 Stanley Cup?

Who's IR will Marian Gaborik bolster?

What stupid move will Glen Sather make this year?

How fast will the Toronto media start kissing up to Chris Neil?

Will Martin Havlat still be kicking it in Chicago?

Will someone meet the Sedins' demands and give them the same number?

Who do you want in a Sens uniform?

General Hockey Discussions / The Toronto Legacy?
« on: June 05, 2009, 01:36:30 PM »
New group unveils vision to launch second NHL franchise in Toronto

TORONTO - A new Toronto-based group has come forward with a proposal to launch a second NHL franchise in Toronto in time for the 2012-13 season.
The Toronto Legacy Group, led by founder Andrew Lopez, laid out its vision at a news conference Friday, suggesting that C$1 billion in financing is already in place for the proposed expansion team.
The team would be known as the Toronto Legacy, and would play out of a proposed 30,000-seat arena built at Downsview Park, located in the north of the Greater Toronto Area.
The group has proposed that 25 per cent of its annual net profits will be divided amongst charitable foundations and non-profit organizations.
Lopez says his group is not affiliated with Blackberry billionaire Jim Balsillie, who is looking to relocate the Phoenix Coyotes to Hamilton.

Can I be the first to say:  What a load of bunk.  I give this less chance than the attempt to revive the WHA.  This looks more like an elaborate publicity stunt.

Jackson/Hull out. Nieuwendyk in.  Jackson goes back to his old gig and Hull falls upward to VP.

Good for Joe; he's been an understudy for a while.
