General Hockey Discussions / Ted Nolan out of the Islanders

Well that was a surprise.  Luckily for the Islanders there are some decent coaches available.  But I'm sure they'll find a way to screw it up.

General Hockey Discussions / Jagr is going to Russia

HKY-Jagr-Russia
MOSCOW - Russian club Avangard Omsk says it has signed Jaromir Jagr, a day after the New York Rangers parted ways with the star winger.
Avangard announced the signing on its website today but did not disclose the terms of the contract.
Jagr had long been reported to be considering lucrative offers from Russia. Rangers general manager Glen Sather said Thursday the club could not wait any longer for Jagr to decide where he wanted to play.
Jagr played for Avangard during the NHL's lockout season in 2004-05.
On Thursday, the Rangers signed former Vancouver captain Markus Naslund to replace Jagr.
(The Associated Press)

Now I'm not discounting the threat of the Russian league trying to land someone big from the NHL, but this ain't it.  This is more of a hockey equivalent of landing Pele or Bekham.

General Hockey Discussions / Avery to Dallas

Nothing to back it up yet, but my 'sources' tell me 4years, $16 mil.

I don't understand why Detroit does this.  They have all the major pieces from their Championship team.  But it is only 1 year.

Anyways, that takes them out of the Sundin chase.

General Hockey Discussions / This year's cap: $56.7 million
« on: June 27, 2008, 09:49:30 AM »
Up over six million bucks.

The salary floor will be $40.7 million, which is higher than the cap was when this system started ($39 mil).

This league is going to have a lot of fun with their payrolls if the Canadian dollar drops.

General Hockey Discussions / Get your foil hat. It's conspiracy time!

If you're as suspicious of the NHL as I was when they did everything they could to stop Jim Balsillie from buying a team; you should be getting a kick out of this.

http://www.thestar.com/Sports/article/447764

What it implies is that Kings owner Phillip Anschutz along with former Preds owner Craig Leipold,  lent bankrpted Boots Del Biaggio the money to buy his stake in the Predators.  Why would they make such a bad loan?  Well Anschutz owns an arena in Kansas City and Del Baggio wanted to move there.  I also find it pretty odd that Craig Leopold would lend someone the money to buy his former team.

But...but...I thought the NHL said no to Balsillie because they wanted to keep the Preds in Nashville!

This looks like an attempt by two owners to install a puppet that will further their interests; a way to indirectly own more than one team.  If that's true this is a serious breakdown in the integrity of the league.

General Hockey Discussions / Rule Changes
« on: June 18, 2008, 08:53:43 PM »

Couple minor ones but the icing rule change is interesting:

"Any contact between opposing players while pursuing the puck on an icing must be for the sole purpose of playing the puck and not for eliminating the opponent from playing the puck. Unnecessary or dangerous contact could result in penalties being assessed to the offending player."

So it's a compromise between the existing rule and no-touch.  If it actually gets called according to the spirit of the rule then it may work out.

Other Sports Talk / Blue Jays talk

Ok, I figured I'd start a 2008 Jays thread that doesn't call for horrible things to happen to JP.  You'll have to read my posts for that.

Thanks to beating up a AAA club named the Royals, they've clawed their way over .500.  Now it's a 9 game road trip in 10 days. Going in, I want them to take 5.  I'll be pretty happy with that.  Win two series, lose one against 3 tough team.

Of course, one game in and it's the same story: bats go silent and waste AJ's 10K night.  :icon_angry2:

At least we didn't hit into a double play. Again.

This team is so upsetting.

Oh sure, Sens got swept, 67s too.  There no CFL in town (for now).  Not a great year.

Looking over at Toronto things are pretty bad too:  Leafs don't make it again, Raptors out round 1, the Jays stink.  But at least the Marlies are still in, and the Argos might be ok.

Well don't get too down on your town.  You could be in Denver.  In the span of one week here's what Denver got:

Nuggets swept. Humiliated by Kobe.
Avalanche swept. Humiliated by Johan Franzen (9 goals?!?)
Rockies losing.  Troy Tulowitzki gone until All-Star break.
Jay Cutler diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.  Not that he can't manage it, but just more bad news.

Ouch.

Sens Talk / Hey Bryan...read this.

Now I know we shouldn't be talking new coaches in playoffs but whenever the discussion comes up, Pat Burns is a pretty popular choice (mine included) but there's always doubt about his health.  Well he's getting behind Team Canada's bench so I'd say things are looking a little better.

Pat's quotes from the article:
"Coaching is in your blood," he said Monday. "I like the terms that Hitch used the other day saying, 'It's a caffeine for us.' And it is.  "You miss it when you're not there."

"To get back into coaching is something I'm going to look at," said Burns. "This is like taking baby steps back into it but I'm certainly excited about it."

"I feel fine now. I've had some great treatments. I've had some great doctors that were following me."

Make the call at season's end Bryan!

Other Sports Talk / Bring me the head of JP Ricciardi!
« on: March 26, 2008, 01:28:47 PM »
How many ways is this guy going to screw up?  The latest blunder is the handling of Reed Johnson.  Cutting him in favour of that retread Shannon Stewart was already colossally stupid  (of course JP has screwed up with retreads before, see Thomas, Frank).

So what happens? Well, he signs with the Cubs of course!  I know, I know, you're asking "So what did the Jays get?".  That would be...nothing!

I love this quote:

"We've been working on guys for the outfield for a while, and all of a sudden, probably the best fit in a lot of ways kind of just fell into our lap," general manager Jim Hendry said. "We've always liked him. We've tried to acquire him a few times the last four or five years from Toronto. He's really a hard-nosed player. He's an extremely good hitter against left-handed pitching."

LOL!  Jim, just wait for JP to offer him up for free!

General Hockey Discussions / Roberto Luongo skipping All-Star game
« on: January 10, 2008, 11:50:49 AM »
So Roberto Luongo doesn't feel like playing the All-Star Game.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=226854&hubname=

I think it's arrogant and disgraceful.  But it does shine a light on what a low opinion a lot of people have of the All-Star game.  Obviously a lot of players have contempt for it, and fans do too (I don't see many Canuck fans all that upset, some are happy their goalie doesn't get hurt in a pointless game).

General Hockey Discussions / Mike Richards signs 12-year contract
« on: December 13, 2007, 04:09:53 PM »
Wow.  Flyer did the DiPietro style contract.  $69 million over 12 years.  $5.75 mil cap hit.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=225091&hubname=nhl

I think this move is less risky than the DiPietro deal.  12 years will take him to age 34, where it's pretty reasonable to think he'll still be playing at a high level.  If he stays a point per game player like this season then it could turn out to be a really good deal.

"This early in the season, we'll give him a few days off here and, hopefully, the rest will help.

"We don't think this is anything major. Dom says it just doesn't feel right."

Yeah, well we've heard that before.  Somebody may be entering the goalie market soon under "Buyer".

Patrick Kane is ranked #1. His teammate James Van Riemsdyk in the U.S. U-18 is #2.  Angelo Esposito who went in ranked #1, has fallen all the way to #11.

Kane's got skills alright but at 5'10" and 162lbs. at age 18 he's got some filling in to do.  I wonder if his size going to scare off Chicago?

Of course if he's the next Martin St. Louis...

72 goals as a 16 year old. Wow.  2009 and we'll already be talkking about the "next Sidney Crosby".

General Hockey Discussions / Flames aquire Brad Stuart, Wayne Primeau
« on: February 11, 2007, 11:01:08 AM »
The Boston Bruins traded defenceman Brad Stuart, forward Wayne Primeau and a conditional draft pick to the Flames on Saturday for defenceman Andrew Ference and forward Chuck Kobasew.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=195785&hubname=nhl

The Flames think they can win it all.

So for those keeping score it's Joe Thornton for Marco Sturm, Andrew Ference and Chuck Kobasew. Ouch.

Man it must be tough to be a Bruins fan.
