Introductions / I'm Sure no one remembers, but I'm back
« on: January 30, 2010, 11:13:32 PM »
After a long hiatus, I've decided to start posting here again.

If my memory serves me right, the last time I really posted here on a consistent basis was pre-cup run, but my memory could be foggy.

Been a busy few years, finished up at algonquin college in radio, now living in Grande Prairie Alberta, north of Edmonton, so ya it's cold. Trying to move as I've had all I can tolerate here, but until then keep working for the station that I'm at.

Go Sens Go!

EDIT: Apparently I stopped in summer of '08, shortly after I moved out here.

Anything But Hockey / 3D HD

Can't find tickets to the big game? This weekend, when the NBA's best strut their stuff at the All-Star game in Las Vegas, the league will unveil what it hopes will become the next-best thing: a live, three-dimensional high-definition broadcast of it, which they will show to 3,500 viewers on a 45-foot screen at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino for the first-ever live sports event filmed in 3D HD.

Much more than a gimmick designed to trick the eye into believing objects are being hurled at it, NBA 3D HD is meant to create the depth and clarity of picture to produce the sensation of being in the arena. "We're not just going to run after you and freak you out," says NBA Vice President of Engineering Michael Rokosa. "Although there could be instances where a ball comes straight back at the camera, and it's going to feel like it's coming at you."

Layton calls for February election
Last Updated Wed, 09 Nov 2005 14:07:59 EST
CBC News

NDP Leader Jack Layton said Wednesday he will introduce a motion Nov. 24 calling for a February election, avoiding a Christmas vote.

Layton said the motion will call on Prime Minister Paul Martin to dissolve the House of Commons in the first week of January.

"This avoids the holiday election that nobody wants," Layton told a news conference in Vancouver.

Layton said he expects to meet with the party leaders Wednesday afternoon to discuss his plan.

But Layton's motion is not considered a confidence motion, meaning support for it from all the opposition parties won't necessarily trigger an election. It is also unclear whether the government would be bound by the motion.

Martin has promised an election would be called within 30 days after the release of the final Gomery report due Feb. 1.

The New Democrat leader's announcement came days after he rejected the Liberals' health-care proposal and said his party wouldn't support the Liberal government in a non-confidence vote.

The earliest date a non-confidence motion could be introduced is Nov. 15, a designated opposition day for the Conservatives.

But Conservative Leader Stephen Harper has said his party won't introduce a non-confidence motion to topple the government because he had no faith Layton would support the move.

Harper has said he was worried Layton would use the opportunity as potential leverage in his negotiations with the Liberals to get a better deal on health care.

Van de Velde goes for Women's British Open

Associated Press

10/27/2005 12:05:38 PM

SOTOGRANDE, Spain (AP) - Jean van de Velde, the Frenchman who lost the British Open six years ago on the final hole, says he will attempt to enter next year's women's British Open.

Van de Velde became famous in the 1999 British Open when he led by three strokes going into the 72nd hole, and wound up losing the title in a playoff.

Van de Velde, 39, said he was upset with a recent policy set by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, which will allow women to qualify for next year's British Open.

"My whole point is where do we draw the line," Van de Velde said Thursday, after shooting a 7-over 78 in the first round of the Volvo Masters.

Van de Velde called the rule change "a farce."

"If we accept that women can enter our tournaments, then it applies that men can play with women," he said.

The Frenchman said he would get an application and attempt to qualify.

"I'll even wear a kilt and shave my legs," he said.

Next year's women's British Open is set for Aug. 3-6 at Royal Lytham. The event is run by the Ladies' Golf Union, which established a gender policy this year.

The policy says: "It shall be a condition of any competition organized by the Ladies' Golf Union that players must be of the female gender."

Andy Salmon, chief executive officer of the LGU, said Thursday there was no plan to change the rule.

"We will include the same conditions on next year's entry form," he said. "We will not be considering any change to this condition."

The LGU established a formal gender policy this season, which allowed players to compete who had sex-change operations to become females. The best know example was Danish-born Australian Mianne Bagger, who played some LGU events in 2005. Bagger was born a male.

Van de Velde hinted at legal action if he were not allowed to play.

"I just don't understand it, and if my application is not accepted I will definitely get advice and see how far it will go," he said.

"I am making a point. I'm not trying to take a sexist stance. I think there are much more important matters. I think our governing body should concentrate on the long putter, checking clubs. Things like that, not this."

Former Ryder Cup player Barry Lane suggested a change in the rules could end women's golf.

"Do they want 100 men trying to qualify? If they do there won't be any spots left for them (women)."

Other Sports Talk / the chicago white chokes?
« on: September 20, 2005, 12:28:07 PM »
holy geez whats going on in the AL Central. a month ago the Chicago White Sox had a 14 game lead over the cleveland indians, now the indians are suddenly 2.5 games behind (happy now  8)). this could be one of the biggest collapeses ever. it makes the orioles falling apart earlier not as bad. even if the sox didnt choke i was never sold on them to make a long playoff run anyways. but i cant really say that about anyone in the AL, no one really sticks out.

the NL wild card is also exciting as usual with many teams in the hunt. i hope the astros make it again. i like them. the NL west is a complete udder joke, whoever wins that division should decline an invite to the playoffs and allow the runner up in the wild card in. and the Cards are the Cards...personally i think its their year, its certainly their best chance with no team being better then them.

with all of this said, whats the feeling around the MLB playoffs from around here?

watching prime time sports there talking about how the nhl apparently isnt showing the draft lottery?

if this is true, then the nhl is making a huge mistake. the draft lottery itself is going to be more exciting then the draft itself.
