According to Murray there was room for both Alfie and Ryan
« on: August 14, 2013, 02:28:13 PM »
" Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk strongly suggested in an interview with a local newspaper this week that his team was faced with a decision in July: either meet longtime captain Daniel Alfredsson's contract demands or go out and make a trade for an impact forward like Bobby Ryan.
Melnyk told the Ottawa Citizen in a report published Monday the club would not have been able to do both, but Senators general manager Bryan Murray said that isn't necessarily the case.
"I think Eugene's being a little hard on himself in that scenario," Murray told NHL.com. "We had talked about a way of doing Alfie's contract and still making the trade for Bobby Ryan, both financially and in terms of player return for [the Anaheim Ducks]."

Can you imagine the strength of the team if that did happen?

Time passes, things change, the Sens WILL WIN the CUP.

I don't think Murray could have offered him enough to keep him.  He obviously had his mind made up before a figure ever came into play.

Well the waters just got muddier today....

Alfie and Murray both had their own press conferences.... ANNNND...... nothing is any more clear..

Alfie wanted 7 mill at 1 year or 12 mill at 2 years.

Murray wanted 4.5 at 1 year, with room to talk.

Alfie saw his last year playing at 1 mill as a discount and wanted to be compensated. Then signed in Detroit for less.....  :smily677:

Very hypocritical of Alfie considering his contract was front-loaded. My respect for the guy is dropping every time he opens his mouth. I'm approaching the good-riddance point.

I don't blame Alfie for wanting to be paid fair market value for his services after taking less than market value for the majority of his career, but I believe that Barry did not properly relay all the information to both sides.
There are good coaches and there are bad coaches, the real question is "Do you want this person to be a role model to your kids for the next 6 months".  That's the question you have to ask yourself.

I honestly hope Detroit implodes this year and doesn't even make the playoffs.  I know chances are slim of that happening though.  OR if they do make it they play the Sens in the first round and get their asses handed to them.

Ok if I did the math 16 MIL for a player in his late 30's is not market value? WTF.
Anyways here is how I see it

1) JP Barry presented the facts to Murray, Murray laughed at 7 MIL a year for a 40+ right winger, offered 4/5
2) JP Barry convinced Alfie that the 4.5 mil was a snub and a lowball offer.
3) Alfie gets mad. Refuses to negotiate
4) Murray reaches out to JP Barry to negotiate further
5) JP Barry throws up a block allowing Detroit to get to Alfie before he can speak to Murray
6) Alfie takes his curls and hair products to Detroit, blames everyone but himself.

Bottom line Alfie had Murrays number, if this truely was important to him, he would have got this done. Instead he walked on 17 year career from a team who has paid him more than 50 MIL.... All for a few million. I thought Alfie had integrity here.  Murray tried to contact Alfie several times, and thats a fact even JP admits. Alfie camp played the "We were not offered a solid deal" when in reality they never extended any opportunity to Murray to negotiate.

Again, I can wait to see Alfie in a Deadwing uni get plastered into the boards.....  :woohoo
Luongo sucks.

They will be a strong contender in the East. Alfie needs to last 80+ games though....

A lot of people would argue that the 16+ mil he got was fair market value. 7 Mil for a 41 year old winger with recent health issues is not fair market either. As for being compensated for the 1 mil season, they never offered Murray a chance to seal that side of the deal. It never got that far. It was "We want 7..." and then when Murray offered 4.5 out of the gate they just ran.  I mean would it have been too much to get back to the table, each give a million and meet half way?

I agree with all that Billy said in his last three posts, so I won't repeat anything he said!

And I agree with Jason too....ideally Detroit does  not even make the playoffs (and they came awfully darn close to that this past shortened season) but playing them in the first round works for me too! :woohoo

He didn't really take less than market value at the end.  It was a front-loaded contract that I believe he did renegotiate at the end to help the team.  He's not worth $7-million a year regardless of his "leadership off the ice".
