Sens looking a little less imported

Is it just me or does there seem to be a real move towards North American talent for the Sens? Look at who has left and who is in and it seems to be a trend to me. Just throwing this question out there.

There was some speculation by Gord Wilson and callers this afternoon that that may have been a consideration for Mucks and Murray.

The trend continues ...

Wow we certainly shouldn’t get any “Soft european team” cracks for a while…

1 Swede - Alfie
1 Slovak – Meszaros
1 Russian - Volchenkov
1 German - Schubert    (Well 2 … Heatley was born in Freiburg but he is a North American boy IMHO)
1 Swiss – Gerber

16 (17 with Dany) North Americans – 13 Canadians and 3 Americans

I love the move (intentional or not) towards North Americans. Not that I have anything in particular against Europeans … just that I love the ability of North American players to “step it up” for the playoffs.

If you take a look at the Europeans that are left, not one of them is soft at all.

Except for maybe Gerber, but goalies aren't really supposed to go out there and hit people or get in players' faces or drive hard to the net.
There are good coaches and there are bad coaches, the real question is "Do you want this person to be a role model to your kids for the next 6 months".  That's the question you have to ask yourself.

I was actually thinking when I wrote my comment, but then again North American goalies haven't figured out that they're not supposed to get physically involved.  Although I would like to see a goalie fight this year.  I haven't seen one yet.  I think it's because there is too many European goalies.

Well most of the time the reason why goalies get into fights is because of a big scrum in one team's end that the other goalie jumps into causing the numbers to be a lopsided 6 vs. 5... The other goalie is forced to come down and even it up so nobody gets pummeled no matter who they are. Lots of European goalies have gotten into fights... Even Hasek. :laugh2:

The fact that we don't see brawls breaking out on the ice anymore is why there are no more goalie fights. There ALMOST was a goalie fight in that Washington/Atlanta game a couple months back, but the referees got in the way.

No goalie in his right mind would even set foot outside his crease during a brawl when Emery is in the Sens' net. :laugh2:

I don't even think any player in his right mind would set foot inside of Emery's crease during a brawl.

There was a game last year . . .I think against Tampa, when one of their net-minders was skating toward Emery.
Dean Brown was like "Ohhh! Burke (or Grahame). . . you do not want to go there !!!"

I was thinking "please, please go there !"

I was going to mention something about the European content...Atlanta has it ow...and they are having a regular season we Sens fans are accustomed to...let's see how quickly THEY bow out of the play-offs. I think maybe N American players just grow up from day one with Lord Stanley in their faces.....so the importance of this trophy is never lost on them. The Europeans just don't have that same passion...how many teams have won the cup with a European captain? Zero...just sayin'

Our Euro guys aren't soft either.  Volchenkov is the toughest SOB in the NHL as far as I'm concerned, Mez isn't soft by any means, Schubert is massive, and Alfie isn't afraid of contact.
For me, if it takes the end of the world to save the world, then so be it.

Alfie has been around the NHL so long I'm sure he wants a Cup win as much as our north american players. But I do agree that it isn't the same for younger euros who mostly don't get what "cup fever" is all about. Chara and Havlat being some of them.

I doubt canadians would go to europe and feel as strongly about winning one of their championships either.

I was going to mention something about the European content...Atlanta has it ow...and they are having a regular season we Sens fans are accustomed to...

Let's See:
Atlanta:  GP - 45 | W- 24 | L-13  | OTL - 8 | PTS -56 | GF 139 | GA 138 | PP 17.1% | PK 79.3%
Ottawa:  GP - 45 | W- 24 | L-19  | OTL - 2 | PTS -50 | GF 148 | GA 127 | PP 17.8% | PK 83.0%

The difference is the Loss vs. OTL columns which can be directly attributed to our early season goaltender woes.
Ottawa has more goals for, less goals against, better PP, better PK .
If Atlanta and Ottawa switched divisions . . .Ottawa would be in 2nd place in the conference

How is it, exactly,  that Atlanta's is having a regular season that we Sens fans are accustomed to ?

ok...point taken...I was meaning more generally, quite a few wins with a lot of fancy play on the ice...the stuff that traditionally doesn't translate into play-off success. Maybe I'm wrong on this...it's just how I see it. They lack the toughness that it seems the Sens are getting now.....even our Europeans as was mentioned.

Yes that will be interesting to watch

As for europeans they have the same passion... but for many of them that passion is for the World Cup/Olyimpics. This is changing somewhat as more and more young hockey players over there follow the Stanley Cup. It stands to reason that when you are a kid learning and loving the game you idolize and emulate your hockey heros. Here in North America our hockey heros battle for the Stanley Cup, in europe their hockey heros battled for the gold. It's hard to replace that kind of young influence/imprinting no matter how much you want to win.

Well the differences are getting smaller and the day will come when a European captain hoists the cup. All that being said I still like the new look of the Sens.
