Murray likes Predators' gamble
« on: February 17, 2007, 02:53:34 PM »
Bryan Murray says the Predators have sent a message to their players that it's time to win.

Ottawa Senators coach Bryan Murray likes the message the Nashville Predators sent to their players by picking up star centre Peter Forsberg on Thursday.

Murray says Predators general manager David Poile -- the GM with the Capitals when Murray was coach in Washington -- gave up plenty to get Forsberg, including Scottie Upshall, the rights to star junior defenceman Ryan Parent, and first- and third-round draft picks this summer. But he believes it was a gamble worth taking.

"(Poile) made the big move, there's no question he paid a bit of a price," Murray said. "David has been in the league a long time and he has a real terrific team right now, and the message to his players and his city is very definitely, 'We're trying to win,' and it couldn't be any louder or clearer than that.

"I think it's a tremendous move for them and a big upgrade -- and they didn't need an upgrade, but they got a big upgrade in a playmaking centre who has been through the pressures before. He gave up a couple of young players, but sometimes you have to do that. It's a great move for Nashville, and in the long run, it will probably help Philadelphia because they get some kids and two draft picks, and they'll have to do some rebuilding with that."

If Forsberg was the biggest commodity on the trade market, there are still a few veterans available who could help the Senators before the Feb. 27 trade deadline. Once again, Murray played coy on who the Senators might be interested in, but the names of Florida Panthers left-wingers Gary Roberts and Martin Gelinas are on the list. The decision lies in the hands of GM John Muckler.
