This may be our last real good kick at the can in a long time.
Mucks obviously disagrees with that, these moves are not taking a bet on a big run for the cup and deal with the consequences later kind of deals these are smart, middle moves to grab some pieces (by the way this is about exactly what mucks said he wanted) to give us a better shot this year without selling out the future. I expected more of a move to make it this year but I am not entirely convinced this will be our only shot for a while. I was but now I am beginning to think there is every possiblity that we could be in the hunt again next year.

And if that is the case...then we'd still would have been on the outside looking in.

That's right because Muck's has a hard time dealing for today!  Who knows what can happen tomorrow but we have a great shot.... TODAY! :icon_fryingpan:

I hope for the sake of Oilers fans, there able to sign Smyth in the offseason. He's worth his asking price.

Just quickly browsed an Oilers fan site (http://oilfans.com/forum/index.php?t=thread&frm_id=3&rid=0) and there isn't nearly the amount of anguish and general complaining as I would have expected.  Still too early in the day for them?  Or maybe this just isn't one of the more vocal sites.

Guess they can't log into it from work. LOL  Seriously though, they are pissed!  That's like 3x the Alfie's traded, they are NOT a happy bunch, understandably so,  he rocked their playoffs!

Muckler stated he was not willing to move anyone off of the current roster, so that automatically eliminates you from any chance of landing an impact player. I stated earlier in February on another thread that because there were so few teams that were sellers that the price of players would be higher then normal.

So I personally don't understand why people are surprised with the prices some of the teams are paying. Win or Lose at least they will can say they gave it their best shot, I respect that.

SFW'S RANT:

i have no sympathy for smyth. none. if what is being speculated is true and that both sides were only a few hundred thousand dollars apart, then shame on him. i understand that it's business, blah blah blah but this guy has been an oiler for a decade. even in a business situation, kevin lowe would not realistically lowball smyth. this is the face of the franchise but lowe has to look out for the salary of the rest of his team especially in a salary cap NHL. both sides were obviously in the same ballpark when negotiating. when you're talking about 5+ million dollars a season, a few hundred thousand is pennies for a player to give up. Especially for somebody who claims to love the city and love the franchise so much.
i believe the saying that NHL players have a short shelf life and need to make as much as they can because of the length of their careers is circumstantial. with players making the kind of money smyth is, a few hundred thousand dollars will not make a legit. difference . i saw clips today of smyth crying at the airport before leaving the airport. take those tears to long island. if you truely loved the city of edmonton and the oilers, you would have stayed and given up that relatively small amount to continue being the face of the franchise.

Very well said.  If you wanted to stay and Oiler perhaps you could have done something like Alfreddson did when we were having some problems.

My sentiments exactly.  It is one thing for Gretsky to cry because he had a contract and the shock of leaving the Oilers was difficult for him.  Smyth made himself look like an idiot by blubbering he didn't want to go.  Well, perhaps he should have instructed his agent to get a deal done (best one possible) in the range both parties were at.  It could have gotten done had he really wanted that to happen.
