Classmate - I'm with you.  I'm cheering for the Pens.  I like these young 'uns.  Too many folks are dumping on them for allegedly whining and diving. I don't agree with those observations.  Crosby has been much quieter this year and just playing the game hard.  Malkin is a monster.  He certainly has come a long way from his time at the World Juniors when he disappeared with the first hit.  These guys are fun to watch.

At least both these teams will sell out their games.  Is anyone else besides me shaking their heads at the Red Wings games?  They are in the conference finals and I see PLENTY of seats empty.  Gimme a break.

Given the state of the economy in Michigan right now, I don't find this too surprising.

Well said, I totally agree.  I am guessing most of the people here wouldn't yell too loudly if any of those mentioned above were on the Senators.

Sadly, this is too true.  However, tonight's game seemed to be better then the last game.  The sports analyst here in the states have many theories why attendance is lower for this playoff.  Many agreeing on the horrific economy and the price of tickets being the biggest reason.

I agree with you on that... for me when I don't really have a favorite in a series I generally go for the team with the most committed fans. What's good for hockey. And for whatever reason, its pretty sad that the wings aren't selling out conference final games when they're favored to win the cup.

But it does seem like a perfect storm in detroit, not just with the rustbelt michigan economy the way that it is, but also the history of the redwings franchise the last 5 yrs. Perennially the best team in the league during the regular season, and a playoff choker... even if they were to win the cup, detroit fans are spoiled. Buffalo is in pretty bad shape but there are still leagues of devoted fans there.

Its almost the opposite of leaf syndrome, so much success and so little money, yet there's problems.

Red Wings fans are generally very very good.  They know their hockey and they support their team.  A HUGE factor in the lack of tickets sold is because of the economy... things are not good there right now.  Why would you spend your extra money on a luxury?  Not exactly the smartest thing to do when you have a family to feed.

When the Wings start losing, the fans will still be supportive ... when the Flyers start losing, everyone should be fired (different kind of passionate) and when the Pens start losing, fans will jump of the bandwagon ...

Well at least you acknowledged that flyer fans won't jump off the bandwagon. They definitely don't. Philly fans are the most devoted and hostile in all pro sports.

The economy is definitely a factor, but I really don't think its the whole story. There are and have been many economically struggling cities that have supported a sports franchise, let alone a city as big as detroit. Pro sports have historically been an arena in which people channel what little disposable income they have, because its perceived as having meaning, unlike other luxury items. I really do think that many red wings are bored with the wings. If they went through half a decade of not making the playoffs and then suddenly went on a run, you'd see fans out in force. Its an embarrassment, and the economy is not enough of an excuse.

As I said, its a perfect storm. But the diehard wiings fans know as much if not more about hockey that we do.

I have to disagree with this statement.   Have you ever heard of team by the name of the STEELERS?  The fans are  CRAZY! Good lord, don't go to Pittsburgh if you are not a Steelers fan during football season.  And I have to say, the fans have gotten to be the same way with the Penguins in the past few years. I don't see the same thing in Philly, I have to say. I would bet on the Pittsburgh fans over the Philly fans anyday.

The Pens fans didn't show up when they had a sub par season ... AND Crosby and Staal ... even when they had Malkin in his rookie year - they still were showing up.  Or hell, when they had Lemieux!!

Pretty sad if you ask me.

Flyers fans are just really hard on their team.  I don't think their attendance goes down that much ... and for those who don't go to the games - they are likely boycotting the team for a while.  They are easily the quickest to boo their own team ... but once it comes to the opposing fans, they will stick up for them ....and give you a couple shots in the face (lol ... sadly true).

I'd pick Flyers over Pens fans anyday.

I feel bad for the true Pens fans ...

That may be but gared66 did say all pro sports.  That is the point I totally disagree with.  I hate the Steelers, believe me, but no one is as crazy or dedicated as their fans are.

I see lots of Philly fans, (Both Flyers and Phantoms) and they just are pathetic whinners, IMO.

That's why I specified the Flyers  8)  I don't pay attention to football at all.

I just hate the bandwagon Pens fans as much as I hate the bandwagon Sabres fans.  Should be interesting to see the Sabres attendance next season.  Unless the Bills continue to suck, we will likely see a decrease.

True about Buffalo.  The people go with the winners.  The cost of the tickets though, I can't really blame them.  I am a Buffalo Bills fan but boy do I hate the Sabres. Win or lose, the choice would be easy for me.

I'm surprised with as poorly as the Sabres played, they still sold out all home games this season, and Versus had their highest ratings ever there, even though Buffalo didn't make the playoffs.

I was saddened to see how bad attendance is for the Toronto Marlies, even though they're into game seven of the second round of playoffs... just over 3000 people showed up to see them playing against the Syracuse Crunch. I guess Toronto's a Leafs town, not a hockey town... even though the Marlies are the Leafs farm team.

The economy is a much larger factor in Detroit than you seem to wish to acknowledge. People in Detroit who wish to get out and move to another city in order to get themselves a job are unable to because they simply can not sell their houses as nobody is buying them, and surely if there are buyers they are not giving "fair market value" for the actual value of the property.
