Who's Next
« on: August 30, 2008, 10:18:08 PM »
So seeing as we (Bryan Murray and the Sens) figured out the Meszaros problem.  Do you think they stay with the status quo.  Seeing as we still have 7 million in available cap space there is tons of money for a second line centre, the likes of which we haven't had in a long time.  So here's the question does bryan murray stay with what he has now and see how things progress through the season or does he go hunting for that illustrious second liner that eluded us in the '07 finals.

Assuming $2 million for injuries, that's still $5 million, and I think Murray has something up his sleeve, regardless of what he says in the press. He's been very smart in the off-season by not jumping on the crazy-money bandwagon like half the GMs out there, and I'm sure there's a few very good second line players still on the market (I'll let others bring up the list  :smily1263: ).

Melnyk has always said he's willing to spend to the cap, so I don't see this year as being any different.

I was thinking he should be looking at about 4.5 MH but I agree with you.  If anyone has a list of available UFA's I'd love to see it.

Really not a whole helluva lot at center except for Vasicek and Smolinski.  We may now have the cap space to bid for Sundin though...I know, I know he's not coming here.

I think Murray is going to see what he has heading into training camp and then he'll use one of his two 1 st rounders to help patch any holes he feels are in the lineup.  The most obvious would be the 2nd line center position, but I'm sure that Murray has a couple of ideas on what he wants to do about that one.

He's done a great job so far IMO, and I trust he'll continue.
There are good coaches and there are bad coaches, the real question is "Do you want this person to be a role model to your kids for the next 6 months".  That's the question you have to ask yourself.

I don't think we have that much... by my calculations we have about 5 million total, if we dress the minimum number of players... that should be enough to sign, say, Glen Murray or Mark Parrish, and keep the buffer zone... far as I know, those two and Brendan Shanahan are the only "second liners" left on the market (and i'm not sure which if any still qualify as that)

I don't know of anyone who fits that bill who would be on the trade market at this point in the season... maybe around halfway through, we might be able to get that elusive second line guy... there's no doubt Murray's got his ear open

personally, i wouldn't mind seeing us leave some space available for next summer so we can put ourselves in the Bouwmeester sweepstakes of the deadline/offseason... i'm not sure i'd want to pay what he might command on the open market, but if we were able to bring him in at the deadline, we could maybe get him to sign on for less...

oh yeah, more importantly, we'll need cap space for a goalie

You gave two options and I agreed with one of them.  What's your friggin' problem?

I think he might go for a forward, but I'm thinking it's more likely to be a winger.  Based on the contract that Vermette signed, it seems to me that their intention will be to give him a shot at being a 2nd line centreman.  I think he'll try to find someone to play alongside Heatley and Spezza, and Alfie will start the season with Vermette.  Just my 2 cents, but if there's a move left here, I think that's what it is.

My proposal is still to go for Shanahan, but if he's going to trade, let's say, hmmmmmm......

How about that 1st rounder they got today from Tampa, along with Schubert, to LA for Dustin Brown?  Pure imagination on my part, and there's no way that LA would part with a guy like Brown.  So, because I've posted it here, it's going to be an E3 tomorrow on hockeybuzz.  Didn't you know that I'm one of his "sources", because I can make up a trade?

There are a number of teams over the salary cap who will need to make some moves and Murray is in now in an excellent position to go that route.

Over or close to the ceiling:

Anaheim - 8 forwards will be UFA after this season
Washington -  deep at centre...although a lot of young players they won't want to part with
Calgary - built to win this year...don't see them giving up to much
Philadelphia - loaded at forward...maybe they would part with Knuble?
Chicago - probably too much invested on the blueline...Seabrook's name keeps coming up
San Jose - can't see anything great here..
New York Rangers - waiting for Sundin??  anything's possible if he signs in NYC

no, i know, that's what i was getting at, sorry re-reading i didn't express that well, i just mean i'd rather he go the FA route, so we have room next summer than make a trade... of course if the trade knocked my socks off, like that Schubert + SJ pick for D. Brown (E4 now :D), well I could change my mind...

You forgot Ray Emery :)

Yes, not the most inspiring list... but there really aren't many goalies better than the list likely to be available via trade in the near future either...

Actually, re-reading that list, if Niklas Backstrom were available, I would gladly take him! His availability will probably depend on Harding's season

otherwise, it may well be that resigning Gerber is the best option, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, IMO, depends how he does this season, i guess

I think it depends on how well Auld does this season.  We can't forget that Murray is very high on Elliott and depending on how he does in Bingo and how Auld does this season, this could be Gerber's last season in Ottawa.
There are good coaches and there are bad coaches, the real question is "Do you want this person to be a role model to your kids for the next 6 months".  That's the question you have to ask yourself.
