Shean Donovan could be out for the year
« on: November 20, 2009, 03:39:44 PM »
He'll be out for a 'long time' for sure according to TSN. The Sun says he could miss the rest of the season. He's replaceable, but he was nice to have as a depth forward who was cheap, hard working and more than happy to play the role of a 13th or 14th forward.

The Senators will also be without fourth-line winger Shean Donovan tomorrow and maybe for the rest of the season. He sustained a right knee injury on a knee-on-knee hit by Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke. The exact extent of the injury won’t be known until more tests are completed today, but Senators general manager Bryan Murray said it was serious.

“It’s his MCL (medial collateral ligament) for sure and he’s having an MRI to see if it’s the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), too. We won’t know until tomorrow,” said Murray.

Sounds like the kind of injury Hamel got when he played for Buffalo.  He was out a year and a half but never was as fast as he use to be after that.   :crier:

With Shean being 35 years old, a journeyman fourth liner and in the last year of his current contract, that knee on knee by Cooke could result in a career ending injury for Donovan!!

Keep that in mind Chris and Matt for the next time we play the Penguins!!   :icon_angry2:  Totally unnecessary hit (one for which Cooke is known for) with a game out of reach for the Pens (was 6-2 at that point, I believe).   :shake:

Really too bad for Shean.   :crier:

Thank goodness we still  have two more games with the penguins this season.  The way the game ended and with the hit Cooke dished out will make for some "interesting" hockey.  I can't believe this hit will go completely unpenalized.  In the game and afterwards, regardless of the results with Donovan this should be an indictable call.

This is absolutely awful. Donovan has been one of my favourite Sens since joining the team and an incredibly effective player night in, night out - especially for a guy on the fourth line. I hopeful for a miracle in that he bounces back quickly!

That's too bad.  It could be awhile before he's recovered and at his age and being somewhat of a fringe player, I don't know if anybody will want to take a chance on him.

I hope so.  It would be a crappy way to end his career.

Its sad. I really like him. I don't think he is gonna return. Or if he does he isn't going to be as good as he once was.

The latest from Sportsnet - down to 6-8 weeks, hopefully.

At first, it was feared that Donovan could miss the remainder of the season but an MRI on Friday did not reveal any significant structural damage to the ACL. However, head coach Cory Clouston said there may be further testing on the knee once the swelling goes down.

"There's a good chance there could be some ACL damage as well," cautioned Clouston. "So it might take six to eight weeks before we know what the complete extent of it is."

Even if he heals as fast as they hope, he will have to earn his way back. If the young guns are worth their while, they will pounce on this opportunity to solidify their places.  I like Donovan and what he brings but he was a bubble player at the start of the year and I would expect that this will be a career ender for him.

He's so well liked - revenge is likely by his team mates.  Cooke is a marked man for the Sens.

Revenge is something people seem to say when something happens to a Senator but the team never seems to agree with us, or else they have short memories.  I'm happy if they go after the guy after the initial incident.
It's hard to believe the COOKIE MONSTER could do so much damage.

I think that is one thing Sens fans are hoping has changed during the off season.  One thing for sure is that these guys are now sticking up for one another more than they had before.  The obvious change is how quickly they clear the net for Leclair of opposition bodies, whereas before they would let the goalie fend for himself.

I don't think he is a bubble player, but is rather one who becomes victim of the numbers game.  I'll never understand why he has been scratched the games he has been as he is a hell of a player who aggressively battles along the boards which really improved the teams ability to cycle the puck.

Neil should do something about it. We are paying him 2m for sticking up for his team-mates. If he doesn't then we wasted 2m dollers

The only problem is that when someone goes after Cooke for what he did the league WILL come down hard on the team and player for said revenge.  It isn't something they look kindly on.

I am kind of po'ed that Laraques gets called on the carpet for his knee-on-knee over the weekend on Kronwall (who sounds like he has the same type injury as Donovan now...going to be out about the same length of time) because a penalty was called (although it was a tripping minor) but nothing for Cooke because nothing was called.  Both "outcomes" were the same but they are being treated differently by the League.  Sheesh! :shake:

The problem with Cooke is that he has a history of this sort of crap.  Too bad the league doesn't see fit to come down on him despite the fact that there was no penalty on the play.
There are good coaches and there are bad coaches, the real question is "Do you want this person to be a role model to your kids for the next 6 months".  That's the question you have to ask yourself.

Yep.  And, personally, I also feel that Kronwall is an "A-lister" player, overall.  Donovan...not so much (at all).  And while I am not the most cynuical person around, I DO feel that the status of the victim(s) to their team is coming into play here and that p*sses me off!! :icon_angry2:

And to boot, the knee on knee on Donovan went pretty much ignored by the media as well.

The knee on Donovan "looked" to be the result of a front-on hit whereas the knee by Laraque was the result of him very obviously sticking his leg out.
