Damn. Gonchar less than 10,000 away from making it all Sens.

Very well done Ottawa.

If anyone doesn't like homer based results, whine to the NHL, piss off about giving Sens, and Leaf fans, grief for voting for favourites.

Phaneuf just took a puck to the head so maybe that will get Gonchar in as a starter too.   ;)

Very well done Ottawa.

If anyone doesn't like homer based results, whine to the NHL, piss off about giving Sens, and Leaf fans, grief for voting for favourites.  The NHL makes a mockery of it by giving 30 votes per e-mail address and 30 votes per text message number. Looks like they want a solid hometown representation to make sure there is enough local buzz.

Sens fans are danged if they do and danged if the don't vote anyway. Don't vote in their guys, and the comments are about how lame the fans are for not supporting their team. Vote them in, and it's a travesty and making a mockery of a sacred event!

 :ccclapping:  Very well put, OS

They shouldn't let fans vote.  This is the Montreal All Star game all over again.

Not quite. Alfredsson, Spezza, Michalek, and Karlsson are all legitimate alll- stars. Maybe Alfie's production has slowed a little the last couple of years, but hey, Nick Lidstrom still gets in every year too. Montreal had Kovalev, Komiserek, Markov, and Price (during a not very good year) in the game.
Karlsson is the league's leading scorer among defensemen.
Michalek was the league's leading scorer until he got injured.
Spezza is 12th in the league in scoring and may be a bit of a stretch, but let's face it, the guy plays pond hockey most nights anyways and is made fo the all- star game.
Alfie is king. He deserves to be in there based on his accomplishments, and I'm proud of Ottawa fans for standing behind him and getting him in there. Now we just have to keep all the Toronto fans out of the building so he doesn't get booed.

Lidstrom won the Norris last year.  Probably not a great comparison.

I remember the Montreal game and I also remember a lot of whining about the likes of Komosarik making it.

The game is meaningless so I usually don't even watch it except for maybe the intros.  It's hard to have a great all-star game in a contact sport.  The only one that means anything is MLB's.

But I still don't think fans should vote.  They keep changing the format but I seem to recall that they used to have the coach pick a sentimental favourite for situations like this year with Alfie.  I think it's nice that he is in the game because of what he's done and it's in Ottawa.  Other than that though, he really doesn't belong.  No great problem with the rest of them being in the game because it's in Ottawa but none of them should really be starting.  The only starter I really agree with is Thomas.

But who really gives a crap?  It will happen in any city as long as the fan boys are allowed to stuff the ballot box.  Personally I vote for the best players in their position but that's just me.  To each his own.

And on that note I will just piss off now before I get attacked by the self appointed moderator again.   :laugh2:

They did the same thing for the Sens (in year one) 1992-93 @ the Montreal Forum All-Star game, when the NHL put in Brad Marsh & Peter Sidorkawich (sic), as representatives for the Ottawa Senators.  :SENS2:

I agree the voting is stupid (and rigged).  But really is who's starting that big of a deal?  If the guys being voted in were going to be All-Stars anyways, I don't see it being that big a deal that it's the home guys.  Once guys who aren't All-Stars get in as starters it gets goofy.

Re: Alfredsson.  Yeah, the commissioner used to appoint a couple slots that went to great veterans or sentimental favourites (anyone remember Brad Marsh representing the Senators?).

Edit: Want to see how broken voting is?  Just look at goalies.  How in the world does Henrik Lundqvist sit 5th with only 209k votes?  And Jonathan Quick at 11th with 118k? And Reimer? Seriously?

I don't honestly see why the starters are even that big of a deal.  They play one shift and are no longer starters. :)  It's a moot point.

I guess as far as the fan voting argument goes, if you are not picking the best players for each position and harvesting the creme de la crop, then how can you really promote it as a true all star game? Maybe "Local Fan Star Game" would be most appropriate. Or would watering it down even more to "Regional Fan Star Game" be better? In any regards, it's a broken system and needs fixing. Reimer...  :bag:

Me too!  But as said previously, by OS I do believe, had the Ottawa fans not stepped up and voted their guys in we'd all be painted with the "what horrible fans" we are.

It is what it is.  I could have cared less when Montreal did same a couple of years back for their 100th anniversary all-star game there.  It would seem, however, that Karlsson garnered votes from all over with the amount of votes he got!  Good for him (even if he gave most of the credit for his numbers of his Dad and his Dad's pals!).

Yeah, maybe not the best comparison, but there are lots of examples out there where guys have gotten into the all- star game based on reputation more than accomplishments in the individual season. I do agree with you that the system is pooched, and the change in format last year made the game even more irrelevant.
As far as who deserves to be there though... Karlsson IS the highest scoring defenceman in the league, and as much as it pains me to say it, he deserves to be there. I agree with you on Thomas- he is far and away the most qualified of those picked to be a first line all- star.
For future games, I'd like to see the players vote the all- star team. Then you know you'll get your best guys out there.

And so you should have!  Otherwise we'd have to endure a starting lineup of Leafs! Not cool!

Works for me!!  I really did not like the draft format last year.  I don't care who it was, I thought it was sad to see Kessel go through that.  Just to get on the team you have to be pretty darn good and I didn't like seeing guys like Ovie mocking the guy.  But Phil seemed to take it OK and I guess he got a car out of it, just thought it was all kind of disrespectful to anyone.  Just my opinion.

I felt the same way. If they're going that way, then do it lottery style at least. Draw names from a hat, or throw everyone's sticks in the middle of the ice and divide them up that way. Nobody goes to the all star game to get embarassed, and Ovechkin is an ass for behaving the way he did during the draft.

He's an ass for the way he behaves most of the time in any given situation.   :rolleyes

That too. The way he behaved during the all star draft last year was just a shining example.
