Alfie out indefinitely
« on: February 09, 2011, 02:56:57 PM »
It has been disclosed that he has a lower back injury and will be out for a while.  No link to confirm yet.

Here is the link

Time passes, things change, the Sens WILL WIN the CUP.

I don't think Alfie ever fully rehabbed after the off season sports hernia surgery.   The team entered the season with to many key guys coming off problems and off season surgery that take a full year to recover 100% from.  Better to shut them down with the playoff shot gone.

Since there is absolutely nothing to be gained by coming back early, I hope that just this one time Alfie doesn't rush himself back from his injury and takes time to let it heal properly. The team can't do any worse without him...

Alfie is just going to head home and be with his new son. He's not injured, just calling it quits early.

Sore back, what? Is spezza contagious now?

:rolleyes  Yeah, there's no chance that his off season back surgery is bugging him.

Who knows, he does have a glass back. Do we even know the exact details of what it was he had surgery on?

Yeah, because that would be soooo in character for Alfie.    :shake:

What new son?  I didn't think that the baby is due until May and I seem to recall that he and Bibi don't know if it's a boy or a girl.

I have had chronic back pain and eventually had back surgery.  Alfie has done nothing to signal he is shutting down because he lost his commitment.

Bottom line,  Alfie is no longer the player he was! So they should trade him to a contender to get a crack at the CUP!  :crier:

This post is a complete logic fail. If he's no longer the player he was, why would a contender want him or think that he would aid them in the playoffs? Also, who's going to trade for a 38 year old who is out with an indefinite injury?

Agreed.  I'd rather have Alfie leading this team next year, then come back to early for nothing.
There are good coaches and there are bad coaches, the real question is "Do you want this person to be a role model to your kids for the next 6 months".  That's the question you have to ask yourself.

Alfie may not be the player he was, but what he could bring to a Contender is invaluable!  He still has the moves, and if he is on a team that is great, he won't be relied on as heavily as he is here, and keyed on by other teams!

He derserves a final shot at the cup and it won't be here in his time!  :icon_bowdown2:

What's with the "trade Alfie" crap that's infiltrating every thread on this board? He's already stated that he wants to stay a Senator, and the team has already stated that he is untouchable. He's got 2 years left on his contract, with 4.5 owing next year, and only 1 mil in salary the following year. Ottawa would be foolish to trade him at this point, unless he requested it, which he hasn't. Let him retire a Senator.

It's a business.  If they can get something for Alfie now then they should go for it.  He's been a good soldier but his days are almost done.  He would be a great 3rd liner on a contender.  Let him go and have a shot at a cup.  If he doesn't want to go, then that tells me plenty about him.  He should want to win a cup.  I really don't get the sentimental feelings on here.  Yes, he was good.  But it's not like they won anything with him.   :smily677:

I like the fact that Alfie wants to stay.  I like the fact that the team doesn't want to trade him.  You don't see that type of loyalty much anymore and that's what's missing from hockey.

Bottome line is, if Alfie wants to go to a contender to get one last shot at the Cup, then the Sens out of respect for Alfie should try and get that deal done.  If he doesn't want to go and he wants to stay here and retire here, then the organization owes that to him.

To me it says a lot about someone who wants to remain with one organization and retire with that one organization.  It's called character.  It's called loyalty.  It's called being a proud captain through thick and thin.
