I don't think that whatever we would get in return for Alfie would be enough to make it worth spoiling the story of the first player to have played his entire career with the current incarnation of the Ottawa Senators, or us retiring his shirt on the day he retires from the game as a Senator.
We all dream of a team of Chris Kellys.

From the Ottawa Senators to season seat holders:

Today we announced that Mike Fisher had been traded to the Nashville Predators in exchange for a first-round draft choice for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and a conditional draft choice in 2012.

Mike has been a great player for us, both on and off the ice, and we thank him for everything he has done for our organization and our community.

More Trade Reaction Videos >

We are all disappointed with the results from this season. A number of you have contacted us and asked us to take the necessary steps to get the team back to an elite level in the Eastern Conference. If we are serious about returning our team to an elite level, we have to make difficult decisions. Moving Mike is certainly one of those difficult decisions and with the trade today, we are definitely looking ahead -- not back -- to the future of our team.

We do want you and other Senators fans to know that once we had determined that a trade for Mike would help our team in the future, we made extra efforts to move him to Nashville where his hockey career will be able to mesh with his personal life. We felt we owed that to Mike for all that he has done for our franchise and our community.

We invite you to view a video interview of Bryan Murray’s comments regarding the trade and what it means regarding the direction of our hockey team.

Sincerely,

You are correct that it is to insulate the Sens, but you are incorrect that they lose it. They are guaranteed at least a 3rd, if NAS wins two rounds it moves to a 2nd.

Disagree.....from the Ottawa sun:

"The conditional pick is Nashville’s third-round selection if the Predators win one round in the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs, and turns into a second-rounder in 2012 if the team wins two-or-more rounds. "

There's only one way to read that - if the Preds HAVE to win in the first round to get the third round pick.  The Preds HAVE to make the Conf. Finals to get the 2nd rounder.

If the Preds don't make it, or bow out in the first round, no conditional pick...but we get a better 1st rounder.

Ok, but this conditional pick thing makes no sense. The draft order is based on regular season standings at the season's end, not playoff performance (with the exception of Stanley Cup Finalists who get the 29th and 30th pick). How Nashville does in the Playoffs, whether 1st round exit,  2 series wins, whatever is pointless in the value of that 1st round pick. Like if they bow out in 1st, 2nd or 3rd round the value of that 1st round pick is the same. So why would Murray do this little game? Just for a little excitement?

Maybe they're basing Fisher's value on how far into the playoffs he helps them get. It's not unusual.

I agree that Alfie should be traded to a contender (like Boston did for Ray Bourque), and then retire his number when he does retire!

And then offer him a front office job!

'Nuff said about Fisher, as we all knew it was coming! :icon_banghead:

As Garry Galley said on the Team today..."They traded Bobby Orr, they traded Wayne Gretzky.  'Nuff said."

If the two best ever can be traded, what the heck makes Alfredsson so special?

Orr wasn't traded though....

meh - my mom has been predicting that...and she lives in Edmonton and doesn't watch hockey.  hardly an "out there" or provocative prediction.  everyone has been talking about it for weeks.

I'm holding back the tears. No, honestly, I really am. Why won't you believe me?

Now, if Murray can get a bag of pucks for Kuba I'll believe that he just might have something to offer in the FO of a professional hockey franchise. He'll have shown a consummate sales ability if nothing else.....

Alfie has stated that he wants to retire a Senator, and I think he has more than earned the right not to be approached about changing his mind. I for one will be there the night they hang the # 11 from the rafters.

Yeah, and part of me thinks it's a privilege to be on a professional hockey team, not a right of anyones. Much better players have been traded. The sens have treated Alfie quite well but at the end of the day, no one player is bigger than the club. If there was a sweet enough deal, I think it should be made. Bottom line, I am not expecting any team to give up anything worth while for a 38 year old player who has a bad back.  He will retire here and the back end of his contract isn't that much.  I too will be there when the hang the #11 from the rafters... they can place it right up there with the cups... doh..   :duh

Bottom line, if they want to sell tickets, they need to win hockey games.
Luongo sucks.

Not exactly......From Wikipedia.....

"The remaining order is determined by the Stanley Cup playoff results.[8] Whichever team wins the Stanley Cup is awarded the 30th and last pick, while the runner-up is given the 29th pick. The teams eliminated in the conference finals are awarded the 28th and 27th picks, with the 28th pick going to the team with the better regular season record. Remaining division winners, then wild card teams are ranked next, filling in the 26th through 15th picks. In both cases, better records result in later picks.[3]"

So, if Nashville makes it to the Conf Finals,  we get a second round pick at 57 or 58, regardless of where Nashville was in the standings.

Hell, at this point, I'd be happy with just getting an empty bag for Kuba.

Phillips is next according to Garrioch.  If Phillips agrees.

Considerin that TSN has had him listed for a couple of weeks as one of the most sought- after defensemen this year, it's not a big stretch for Garrioch to make that prediction. Especially since Toronto got the ball rolling with the Beauchemin trade.

It definately reads like that but they are gaurnteed nashville's pick in 2012, what is conditional is the inner workings of the pick. If Nashville crashes and burns and does not make the playoffs this year then that pick remains a 3rd round, if nashville makes the playoffs and only wins 1 round the pick remains a 3rd round, but should nashville win 2 or more rounds then it becomes a 2nd round.

If Murray made the deal that we would only get the pick if nashville wins a round then he should be fired immediately!!!!!!!!!!

I heard that L.A for one and a couple of other teams were inquirying about Fisher, I wonder what kind of offer they made. I guess what I'm saying is, was there a better offer on the table but Murray sent fisher to nashville because that was his first choice. I hope that was not the case though.

Fisher stated that either the Predators or the Kings were to his liking on a personal level.  Nashville because his wife lives there and Los Angeles because his wife's business is there.
There are good coaches and there are bad coaches, the real question is "Do you want this person to be a role model to your kids for the next 6 months".  That's the question you have to ask yourself.
