Hawks have 3 2nd round picks, from chirp

"Conditional 2nd round pick is definitely a second rounder. Apparently it will be one of the Hawks three 2nd round picks. They also have Calgary's and Atlanta's."

Teams are definately being tighter with throwing around picks this year.  More vale for youth with the cap.

Gonchar, Phillips, Kuba, Carkner, Karlsson, Carkner, Lee, Rundblad, Cowan

Still too crowded in '11 ...

I suspect it will be dealt with like this ...

Kuba - buyout
Cowan - AHL

You have Carkner listed twice on your list btw. Also, Cowen is a lock to play for Ottawa next year. He was basically the last cut this year at preseason and has had a remarkable year in junior to boot. His play has progressed so much this year, it's ridiculous. Also, a big part of Phillips struggles this year is because he hasn't had a suitable partner to play with since Volchenkov left. A pairing of Phillips and Cowen seems like a match made in heaven and finally gives us that awesome shutdown pairing that we've really missed this year. Trust me, Cowen is a lock. Also, buying out Kuba would be a really dumb move. He only has one year left. Probably best to try and trade him in offseason or during next season.

Who is going to take him in a trade? It won't happen.

You are going to use a roster spot for Kuba next year? And Cowan? How many defenceman do you plan on carrying?

I think the 7th rounder is going to Chicago.

Jumped the gun, my bad.

Well right now, we currently have 6 defencemen signed for next year (Gonchar, Kuba, Phillips, Karlsson, Carkner, Lee). Odds are we carry 7 defencemen with the big club. I think Cowen should be a lock, and if Runblad looks good enough room could be made for him. The ideal candidates I would trade would be Kuba obviously and possibly Lee. Both will be in the final years of their deals which makes it easier to trade them as the season progresses. If not, sending them to minors is also an option too. Just play out their contracts, and take a loss if need be. But no point in buying out Kuba for any reason. Why punish us cap wise? It's not like he's a cancer in the room or anything or has a really long ridiculously expensive contract.

We did buy out Jonathan Cheechoo with one year left on him while he was in the minors....

Completely different player. For the one year Cheechoo was here, he was down-right awful. And Murray had zero takers for him in the offseason, so he bought him out. He clearly wasn't good enough for Ottawa, and didn't fit well down in Binghamton with what they have going on down there. Buying him out was pretty much a last resort. Kuba on the other hand, as bad as he has been sometimes, he is still an NHL calibre player and has more value than Cheechoo does.

Really? Because Cheechoo has 47 points in 55 games in the AHL with Worcester. Also, buying him out so that it counts against our cap for two years instead of leaving him in the AHL saved us money how?

Not really. Kuba is no better at defence than Cheech was as a forward. There is no way that they should be keeping him after the season is over. It's addition by subutraction.

Murray has said that Rundblad will play for Ottawa next year. He has not made that commitment to Cowan. Although, I am sure that it is probably in their plans.

It looks a little scary ... for the first couple of years anyway. ;)

I dont like this deal. I think we could have gotten more. The second rounder would be good but its Conditional. The player acquired sucks.

No we could not.  This just highlights just how badly overvalued by Murray Campoli was in the first place.

I think Lee has jumped ahead of Carkner in the depth chart if you ask me... I think he might be the odd one out next year.

As per the TSN trade list, the 2nd round pick ISN'T conditional.

I loved the picture on the front page of the Citizen.  Campoli smiling from ear to ear - he couldn't get out of here fast enough.

Cheers to him   :drink:

I would be happy as hell too. You could almost see it on his face..  "Enjoy your rebuild and gimp captain  :bag: ... " He's much better off in that system.

Considering the only organizations he's been part of have been lottery teams for all but one year of his pro career, can you blame him  :laugh2:?

Now, now, don't get going there Billy!   Kelly was a Sen draft pick, brought up and raised by the team.

I agree with your 7. I would take the same. I'm not a Kuba fan at all. It's just gonna be tough to move that contract. I just don't like the whole buy-out process, and how it affects your cap for a couple years. Too many buy-outs can start to add up to a lot of cap space. If anything, we could just send him to the minors, make him go through waivers, and if not claimed, just bury him in the minors for one season. No need to buyout.

The defence will be young but with a lot of promise. The respective seasons both Cowen and Runblad have had this year has been remarkable. Every senator fan should be super excited.  Cowen has matured, got stronger, and developed more offence to his already sound defensive game. Runblad has absolutely lit up the Swedish Elite League this year. He is currently 3rd in the entire league for points (49 points in 54 games), and as a defenceman to boot. Mind you, he is on the top team in the league with the highest scoring. But still very impressive. I know points aren't everything but just as a comparison, Erik Karlsson had 10 points in his final season in the SEL, Victor Hedman had 21 points and Adam Larsson who plays on same team as Runblad only has 9 points thus far this season.
