Lehner to start Game 1 in goal for B-Sens
After helping the Binghamton Senators to three straight overtime wins to close out their first-round playoff victory over the Manchester Monarchs, rookie goalie Robin Lehner has been named the starter for Game 1 of the Atlantic Division Finals against the Portland Pirates.
"Robin Lehner will be the guy," coach Kurt Kleinendorst said. "He stepped in, and he did a great job for us. He's won his last three games. He's helped us win our last three games. It doesn't take away from what Barry Brust has done-- he's had a great year. But right now, it's pretty obvious that Robin deserves to be there, and Robin will be there. And at the same time, it gives Barry the opportunity to heal some wounds."
Brust, who last played in the B-Sens' Game-4 loss, did not skate at practice on Monday.
Lehner went 3-0 with a 2.73 goals-against average and .929 save percentage in his first three playoff starts as a pro.
"I felt pretty good," Lehner said. "Just keep working, maybe get better and see what happens. I go in there and do my best. If it's enough, it's enough. If not, it's not.
"We need to trust each other," he said. "We need to be comfortable with whoever's on the ice. I'm comfortable with my defensemen, and I think they're comfortable with me. It's huge; if the players can be comfortable with me being back there, we can go full offense, and the defensemen can do whatever they need to do without thinking too much they have to do my job."
