Of last years call ups after the trades were made, Condra looked like he had a better two way game than the other forwards.

But a one way deal for a guy that has 26 NHL games played (most of them after major trades had been made in a rebuild) is something I just don't get.

Were they forced to give him a one-way deal based on when he was originally drafted?  Just asking since I was wondering the same thing as you were. :smily677:

Maybe, but why would they be forced to sign a guy that was drafted in the 7th round (211 overall) to a one way contract?

Perhaps more likely that he balked at signing a two way deal and they thought enough of his play last year to not let him get away for nothing.

As a restricted free agent, he would not have walked away for nothing.

RFA compensation for this year kicks on only if the cap hit is above $1,034,249.  I can't see a team offering a guy with 26 games in the NHL more than that, and I sure hope Ottawa signed him for a cap hit that is under that.

The criteria for RFA draft pick compensation in 2011-12 is as follows:

$1,034,249 annual cap hit or less: No compensation
    $1,034,249 — $1,567,043: Third-round pick
    $1,567,043 — $3,134,088: Second-round pick
    $3,134,088 — $4,701,131: First and third-round pick
    $4,701,131 — $6,268,175: First, second and third-round pick
    $6,268,175 — $7,835,219: Two first-round picks, a second and third
$7,835,219 and higher: Four first-round picks

Which is why he wouldn't have walked away for nothing, the Sens would still have the option to match the offer.  Offer sheets are extremely rare, and I can probably count on one hand the number of offer sheets since the lockout, and I can count on two hands the number of offer sheets offered to players from the lockout before that.

The likely reason for the one-way contract is probably due to his age and the fact he played four years in the NCAA and probably only signed his first contract sometime last year whereas most teams' high draft picks sign when they are 18-20 years old.  It's also likely that he won't be waiver exempt next year, so whether he has a one way or two way deal is inconsequential with the exception of the club's finances.

Murray has signed a lot of guys to one ways that raise eyebrows.  Guess he is comfortalbe with it, and when he figures a person is going to be on the team, he shows some commitment to take a risk.  That should build good relations.  It may also be that he figures they can be traded for a 7th rounder if need be.
