And, as usual, I don't agree with Cox.

Well...based on your previous comment, it would appear that you seldom agree with Cox either! :smily1263:

Because two different sports writer for the same paper don't come to the same conclusions.  The Cox article says Brian should be forgiven for taking four years, and the McGran article says Florida did it in two years, so why has Burke not done it.
It is very unusual for Cox to actually side with the Leafs when they are down, though... ;)

You can have different opinions and work at the same newspaper.   ;)   Kudo's to Florida, they've done a good job but I'm not going to be a Chicken Little as far as the Leafs go.  As long as they don't panic and start trading away draft picks and prospects they are on the right track.

Gainey let go as well.  Not a huge surprise for me.  Wasn't he the one who signed a lot of those big contracts....to small guys?  ;)

Molson said during his press conference on this, when asked, that the next GM would "not necessarily"have to speak French.

Later in the day, Molson's newly appointed advisor, Serge Savard, stated that it "was necessary" that the next GM speak French and that they would only hire a GM who could.

Hmmm.....nice start on rebuilding at the top!   :smily1263:

Let's see if they hire a GM who ONLY speaks French.  The franco double-standard would finally be shown. :)

If they do that, they might as well hire some rink rat in Rimouski.  He'll be about as good at negotiating with agents.

Requiring someone to be able to speak french in their job is hardly a double standard.  Though it may be a dumb decision.

Sure it is.  I bet they would have no problem hiring a French speaking GM.  Not one peep would be heard by the language police.

I find it hard to believe that if they could get, say, Ken Hollands they would give a fig if he spoke French or not.   :shake:   They should be more concerned about getting their team as a whole back on track, not whether or not everyone can speak French.  While I agree that in Montreal speaking French is certainly an asset, continuing to lose should be what they are most concerned about.

It should be about getting a GM that will give your team the best chance to win. Not what satisfies a subsection of the Montreal media. They have had non French speaking GM's before, and they will again, and the only thing certain here is there will be complaints lobbed over from the french 'traditionalists'.

Totally agree with you both. As far as I'm concerned, every player, their agent, and 29 other GM's know how to speak English, and they're the most important people you need to communicate with. Have a bilingual AGM, or have someone in the office translate the media releases, as long as the GM is running the team the way he should and they start winning, their fans shouldn't care about hte language he speaks.
