No confirmation yet of who has died, but the roster includes Brad McCrimmon and former Senators Pavol Demitra and Karel Ruchunek as well as Vitali Anikienko, who was drafted by the Sens in 2005.

Wow.  43 killed.  Lots of well known names, and many with Senator connections.

Crazy. Did anyone catch the interview with Jamie Rivers and Dave King about the travel conditions these players face in Russia?
Jamie Rivers said the planes that they travel on remind him of the plane in the movie Major League.
King said that he and his wife were always concerned about air travel there and that he discussed this with coaches who are going over there and have solicited his advice (he coached in Russia).
Anyway, horrible news. Many young families have been affected and many young men have been taken far too young.
To paraphrase what Alfie said, this isn't just a hockey team or hockey players - these are people with families.

I still find myself thinking of this crash a fair bit... Still seems freaky at how many professional players went down with that plane..

This is the 8th fatal plane crash in Russia this year, and every time it was blamed on pilot error, not on their decrepit fleet. Of course, when the pilot is dead and can't defend himself...

Are you saying that the spin doctors are at work? I don't buy that for a second!  :sarcasm1

My wife and I were discussing this on our flight this morning. Got the stink eye from a few other passengers.

MOSCOW - The pilots of a plane that crashed last year wiping out a professional Russian ice hockey team had no right to be flying it, investigators into the disaster have said.

Vladimir Markin, a spokesperson for the committee formed to investigate the disaster, told reporters that the two pilots were flying the Yak-42 plane “illegally”, Russia’s Ria Novosti news agency reported.

Markin said one of the pilots had “falsified documents”, while the other had not received adequate training on the aircraft, Ria Novosti reported.

He also said that Vadim Timofeyev, deputy head of airline Yak-Service which operated the flight, had been charged with breaching air safety rules.

Thirty-six players and officials from the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team lost their lives when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff almost a year ago. Eight crew members also perished in the disaster.

Among the dead were Swedish goalkeeper Stefan Liv, a former world and Olympic champion, and Canadian Brad McCrimmin, who played over 1200 NHL games and was head coach of Lokomotiv at the time of the crash.

Pilots not qualified and only flying because of falsified documents  :shake:

Sad that an entire hockey team had to die one year ago today because the Russians don't have their shit together enough to make sure pilots are actually qualified to fly the planes they are in.
Lost your job yet?  Keep buying foreign!
