Pre-Season Gameday Thread

Sugar J.Hyde:
I only saw the third period but here's what I thought...of the the third period.

Runblad:  This guy has amazing offensive talent.  It seemed like every time he touched the puck in the offensive zone something positive happened.  However, I heard his name on the radio a couple of times in a few plays that suggested his defensive game needs work.  Offensively he looked phenomenal, though.

Smith:  Love this guy.  Hard worker, fighter, grinder, and he definitely has offensive ability.  He's no 30 goal scorer by any means, probably isn't even a 20 goal scorer, but this guy is NHL player and he will be an effective one.

Greening:  Was this Greening's first pre season game?  Nobody has said word one about him since the start of training camp.  This guy is a beast.  I don't know whether it was because he was playing in front of his home crowd but this guy is fun to watch.  You can't knock him off the puck at all.  He won't be beaten on the boards.  How come nobody is mentioning Greening as a possibility to ride shotgun with Spezza?  I'd love to see him there, personally.

Cowen:  He is on the team.  Plain and simple.  He is ready and I really like how he isn't just a stay at home defense man who has bone crushing ability.  He jumps into the play to create scoring chances.

Zib:  Great period of play from what I saw.  I just really hope he makes the team.  It will make for an interesting year.

I agree with most of what you've seen. The only thing I would add to it is having seen most of the pre- season and rookie tournament games, Rundblad isn't NHL ready yet. He does certainly have offensive talent, but too often stands around looking lost in the defensive zone. He should definitely start the year in Bingo, and see how quickly he learns the North American game from there.

I heard a funny thing on TGOR this morning. As much as Kuba sucks, they can't do anything about him because they need his salary to make the salary floor.

PiePants:
They can't trade him, but they certainly don't need to play him.

This is true. It's hard to justify playing him when almost every defenseman in camp is better than him. He definitely ranks behind Lee, Cowen, Wierchch, Rundblad, and Gryba, who are all fighting for the 2 open spots. Add that to Phillips, Gonchar, Karlsson, and Carkner... and I don't really see a spot for him out there.

Just thinking... I haven't seen any of Konopka yet in the pre- season. Maybe he played in one of the games I missed, or has anyone heard anything about him being injured? I'm hoping to see him in action tonight against the blue team.

I'm excited to see Cowen live tonight. He's looked like a veteran NHLer from what I've seen on tv, but you can only see so much on the tube. I'll be watching him closely tonight, and hoping for good things. So far, I think he's by far the rookie most likely to make the team.
