Alfie may not resign after all
« on: May 09, 2012, 02:02:49 PM »
Translated this article from swedish news paper. Some is google translation had to polish it off some..

When I see Daniel Alfredsson's smile, I think of two things:

1.Team Swedens  captain will lift the World Cup trophy this year.

2.Ottawa Senators captain will NOT quit after this season.

The kids want me to continue he says with a smile.

The first thing I said when I met Daniel Alfredsson here at the World Championships were:

Thank you for being the best that you are - you make me feel young.

- Many have said that I do. That's funny that I can help you with that, haha.

All of us who have become old men think it's cool that 39-year-old Daniel Alfredsson is still absolutely a top notch world-class hockey player.

- I had surgery on my back last summer and I feel great. I have been able to skate better, and I have not been in pain anymore. I have played in all situations and it's been a really fun season.

Do you like Like Per Mårts as a coach?
- I met Mårts (Par) after a game in New York earlier this season. I said, I feel like playing the World Cup, t
So its because of him you are here now?

- It is a part of it, absolutely. I like the type of hockey  Mårts stands for.
The eternally young Alfredsson is the perfect captain for Team Sweden.

I thought first that Henrik Zetterberg should  wear  the C , but he will wear it in  Sochi Olympics in two years.

This World Cup team will be Alfredsson's team. His intense longing for his first world championship gold medal and his happy mood is contagious, and of course, smittens of on the rest of the squad.

His joy when  playing  with "little boys" Calle Jarnkrok and Jacob Silfverberg is almost touching to see.

Could it be that Pär Mårts makes Ottawa a favor when he lets you and Silfverberg play together?
The reason I am asking is  because Silfverberg will  play in Ottawa next season and thought it might make you want to continue?

It was great to see Daniel Alfredsson's reaction when I asked him that.
- Hehe. I do not know. It's very fun to play with Silfverberg. He will be great in Ottawa next year and he's better  than I was when I came to the NHL.
It's very fun to play with the younger players coming up. As I did with Erik Karlsson, since he came to the NHL.

My kids want nothing more than that the old man continue he says..
When I asked  Erik Karlsson, later on I said  "No way Alfie is quitting"?
- No, he can’t. And watch  how much he likes it here. He smiles all the time, said Karlsson.

- We nag all the time  in Ottawa. Of course we want him to continue.

Daniel is the father of four boys and the eldest, Hugo, has said that the father will continue  to play until the youngest one, William, knows what Dad is doing.

- William is just one year old. So we'll see. I will decide this summer. I’ll need some time for  myself after the season to think about it. I still think hockey is fun, but I don’t know about yet another  summer  camp, all trips and nights at the hotel? I do not know.

- Also  I want to spend more time with my family. I miss a lot going on at home, says Alfredsson to himself

But after he  said the above,  he said again that "the kids want me to continue."

So I think we can all be hopeful.

Hopefully we’ll see  Alfredsson and Silfverberg   in the same lineup next season.

But first, they have to win the World Championship gold medal  together.

“One thing that we do know for sure is that Daniel is going to be here,” said MacLean. “Whether he’s playing or he’s on the bench with me or he’s in the office with Bryan Murray. Daniel’s going to be here and he’s going to be a big part of helping us build this program.”

^^I heard MacLean say that in an interview last week and it brought a little smile to my face.  Kind of always felt that Daniel would be staying in Ottawa (based on past comments by Alfie and others within the organization) but since MacLean is the "new kid on the block" it would seem to cement it!

Sounds pretty rough to me.  :sarcasm1
Sorry, I hope he retires if this is how he feels. Its better for him, and certainly better for the team.
Sounds like his head isn't in it.

He needs to come back because HE wants to, and he believes. No one else.

Of course he will always be part of the team in some capacity though. He's a proven leader, and this has been eluded to for years. Melnyk LOVES Alfie and will get his name on a cup.

I wish I was able to retire at 39. :)  But given that he has four kids and a lovely wife that he doesn't get enough time to spend with I wouldn't fault him at all if he throws in the towel.  He even said that training camp and the start of the season isn't the hard part, it's finding the energy to finish the season that is hard for him.

But if MacLean is true in that he wouldn't be surprised if Alfie isn't behind the bench with him wouldn't that mean he would still be away just as much?  Coaches put in a lot of time also I'm sure.

Four kids, and he's not getting enough time with his wife??  :smily1263:
Now that I am older, I thought it was great that I seemed to have more patience.  Turns out I just don't give a damn.

I don't know if you saw, but Alfie was interviewed yesterday, and the transcript was posted on the IIHF website here. He was essentially replying to questions emailed-in from fans worldwide.

http://www.iihf.com/competition/272/news/news-singleview-2012/recap/6946.html

Here are a few tidbits that I found interesting:

[Q]
I would like to know if you see yourself behind the Senators bench as an assistant or even a head coach in the NHL eventually? If so, would you be more of a strategy-minded or a motivator-type coach? (Pierre Larabie, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)

[A]
I think I’d be both. I don’t see myself coaching too soon. I think it takes even more time at the rink than it does as a player to prepare! [chuckles] Right now, I don’t think I’m ready for that. But I like the strategic aspect of the game. I think I read the game really well. I try to talk to our coaches about things I’d like to see at times. I’m interested in how the coaches think. I like that part of it. So I think I’d be a bit of both types. I think I can also challenge guys and motivate them in different ways.

[Q] When you decide to retire from the NHL, will you retire as a member of the Senators, or have you considered playing one last season in the Swedish Elitserien? (Christoffer Olofsson, Stockholm, Sweden - via Facebook)

[A] I will retire as a Senator. I won’t play in the Swedish league again. There are a few reasons. Once I feel like I’m done in the NHL, I think I’m done because mentally and physically I don’t feel like I can contribute as much as I would like or motivate myself. You know, if you go back to the Swedish league and try to play when you’re not motivated, it’s even worse, because it’s more skating and it’s even harder. So I will retire as an Ottawa Senator.

[Q] What's the story behind your jersey number, #11? (Oona Huoponen, Oulu, Finland)

[A] I had #63 in training camp my first year [with Ottawa]. Me and a Finnish guy named Antti Törmänen both made the team as rookies. The trainer came up to me and said, “I’ll give you the choice to choose first. We have #11 or #22.” I picked #11, and Antti got #22. So that’s how it came about. I wore #11 as a soccer player, and that’s why I wanted it. There’s no other story behind it.

Fan petition flatters Alfredsson but decision is personal
« Reply #12 on: May 25, 2012, 08:33:40 AM »
“If I feel I have the desire and the will to go through with the workouts, and to push myself, then it’s a go and I’ll play,” he said.
“If not, I’ll say I don’t have what it takes. I don’t think it’s fair for myself or anyone else to think that I just go through the summer so-so and then expect to play and be good.
“I think it will be frustrating for everyone.”

So by the schedule that Alfie spoke of yesterday (get back into the gym next week and see how he feels in about three weeks' time), it looks like he will make his decision around the time of the draft.  Makes sense.  Time will tell and here's hoping..........

And this is why Boo Garrioch is an idiot...

from the byline: "Needs to tell Sens his future plans"
from the article: "There is no question the Senators need an answer from Alfredsson before the NHL draft is held"

from later in the article: "Alfredsson should take as much time as he needs "

So which is it Boo?  Does he take as much time as he needs? Or is it a matter of life and death and has to be decided NOW NOW NOW????

Yes, the whole future of the franchise depends on Alfie, notifying them ASAP on his plans for next year.  If he shows up to camp great.  If he doesn't, someone else will have to be the 2nd line, right winger.   But we need to know NOW!!!!!
