Sens can shift attention elsewhere
« on: July 25, 2012, 10:46:21 AM »
The cap room is looking mighty good..
I'd say Bobby Ryan would be a very good choice :)

"Though sniper Alexander Semin remains readily available on the open market, the Sens are reportedly focusing on talks with the Anaheim Ducks for right wing Bobby Ryan, who has been on the trade block for the past several weeks.
However, the Ducks appears to be asking for a hefty return for the young winger and the Senators remain unenthusiastic in moving Zibanejad to just any team".

I should add that regardless of what Murray and Melnyk might say right now, the Sens MUST make another big move, since they are still $4 million below the salary cap floor.

unless they extend Alfie for another year at a big salary increase.

...which doesn;t help us this year......any extension would only kick in after this contract expires, no?

And Alfie said in his most recent interview that they kicked around the idea of an extension, but that he decided not to leave the team in the same situation it was (waiting for a decision) next summer.

Even if he doesn't sign an extension the team will still be in the same situation, waiting to see if he will play another year or not..
In the interviews I've seen he kind of seems like the may not be his last season.

But more on topic..
Where exactly do the Sens need to shift their attention?

Metal says we still need to reach the cap floor (Ill take his word)...

There isn't much out there as far as FA's go, a trade would have to be the answer, but for who..

In terms of trades I don't see why they'd be reluctant to send Zibanejad to Anaheim for Ryan if they were willing to send him to Columbus for Nash.
I dont like the $ and term Doan is looking for, but his $$ would help our cap situation. Doubt he'd come here though...

Also,
Is our goaltending situation figured out?
I assume it will be Anderson and Bishop, with a few callups for Lehner....

 :nutkick:

I was a little off (forgot to count the bonus bit), and this is based on 2011-2012 cap numbers, so it could be off a little bit. According to capgeek, the Sens currently have $50,208,333 in salary and $1,175,000 in bonuses for 12 forwards, 6 d-men, 2 goalies and Butler's buyout, for a payroll of $51,383,333. The cap cap last year was 70,200,000 and the floor is always $16 million below the cap, which makes it $54,200,000. So the Sens are below it by $2,816,667. Even if they add Zibanejad as the 13th forwards ($1,744,167) and it's widely believed Boro ($610,000) is going to be the 7th d-man, they would still be below the floor by $462,500.

Of course, that's using last year's cap and floor numbers. If they drop for this year (yeah, right!), then the  Sens might just make it.

Looks like these guys are available: Chris Mason, Scott Clemensen,Martin Biron,Johan Hedberg,Anders Lindback, Jonathan Bernier, Josh Harding, Maybe Miikka Kiprusoff (Contract up in 2014), and of course Luongo whoever wants to take a shot at him looking for 12 year deal and  $64.000.000
Other than that I think Lehner should be given a shot he is a wild card and dont forget what he did in Bing...

Lehner did well in Bingo but wasn't Bishop goalie of the year in the AHL at the time we acquired him, and also the all-star game mvp (doesn't equate to much but still)...

Bishop is older and does have better numbers....BUT, Lehner is becoming impatient from what I hear.
I'd go with Bishop, but thats just me.

Lindback signed with Tampa for 2 or 3 years didnt he?
But I dont think we need to sign an NHL backup, we have two young guys that can fill that role IMO.

Why not just sign someone like Tyler Sexsmith from San Jose to backup Lehner in Bingo for the year, replacing Mike Mckenna who just signed with the Blues..
That way we see if Bishop has what it takes this year and we re-sign Lehner on a short term 1-way next year giving him the assurance he seems to need, and hopefully retaining his RFA status.
And we still have security with Bishop as he will be an RFA at the end of next season.

He's an older vet there to fill the net when Lehner isn't playing (a la McKenna, Brodeur, Brust, etc...).  He wasn't signed to be a prospect.
