According to Bryan Murray:

Confirmed that he will have back surgery for a herniated disc tomorrow in Toronto.  Don't know how long he will be out.  Hoping that he will be back by the end of the season.

Asked when it happened:  Murray said he came to camp and felt good, was skating fine.  During the Pittsburgh game his back started to bother him.  Murray noticed during that game that Spezza was standing a lot while on the bench and when asked, Spezza said that his back was bothering him.  Had him assessed in Ottawa on Monday and he went to Toronto for a second opinion.

Murray thinks it sounds serious.  Doctors said that they basically "go in and clean up around the disc" after which time he will have to stay off his feet for a week and then start rehab.  The doctors told Murray that it is a "simple" procedure overall.  He said the doctors don't seem to find it as "serious" as he does.

Spezza could have possibly played, but he would likely have been in pain most nights and have to take maintenance days regularly and not play all games (particularly in a shortened season with so many games each week).  Murray did not see the point in delaying surgery to fix this for a variety of reasons but not the least was the fact that he said Spezza could not sleep comfortably at this point, as an example, and it could worsen the injury overall so why wait?

Ouch, that sucks.  But with any injury, especially the back, it's never advisable to wait it out.

Ah yes, the back once again. Some of us (Thirsty in particular) have been advocating for years that signing Spezza long term was a bad idea due to his recurring back problem. The Sens would have been better off trading him years ago when that started being a problem. The return might not have been a player of the same potential talent, but this would have open the door for the Sens to look for another #1 center through free agency over the years.

I just had a thought... I wouldn't be surprised if Spezza's injury happened while playing overseas. Players hurt while playing elsewhere during the lockout don't get paid. $7 million (even pro-rated for the half season) is a lot of money to leave on the table. And his play since the start of the season has been very uninspiring, to say the least.

So last a few games, pretend you hurt yourself in the previous game and still get your salary.

Makes sense to me.

Spezza's "injury" is not so much an injury as a condition, IMHO.  Unfortunately, he has back issues that are likely to recur from time to time.  Definitely sucks.  But pinpointing when the disc herniated would be next to impossible to determine.  As much as anything, the Swiss league that he was in is not as hard hitting as the league he came home to.  He may have been able to  play a complete season in a lesser league with less wear and tear on his back.   :smily677:

The chrome problem here was never solved, huh? That trips me up. I don't think he was hiding the injury. spezza seemed pretty eager when he came back to Ottawa. It sucks. This really should have been the transition year of the captaincy from Aflie to Spezza.

There's no getting around how bad it is. I think Turris is a questionable 2nd line center, and now with everybody targeting him, you wonder where the plays will come from. If there is one silver lining it's the fact that Ottawa is an offensive team from the defense out, i.e., Karlsson. It makes for unlikely heroes. That their offense really isn't generated by the forwards gaining the blue line, but by the passes from their own own blue line and fast break transitions into the other team's zone. You know, Jim O'brien has scored some important goals for this reason. The Sens have a way of finding unlikely heroes because of that mobile defense.
