Group Projects. Sure they are easy in high school, everybody should basically live in the same area due to school boundries. But when you get into college/universities its totally different as people live all across Ottawa and outside.

I understand its required by the ministry, but why must the college dump all group projects in 1 semester. Last year we had 1 group project in first semester, this year, every single damn class has a group project, and they aren't small. I've been working on one for Civil Procedures for the past 2 months, and only 3 of 4 parts are done and handed in.

Group projects are for suckers...and suckers' related programs!  I can't stand working with tools...I have no patience for it...and I hate it when part of my mark rests in their hands.

I'd like to turn the tables and welcome more school work. I've finished all my readings for the rest of the semester, and got a major assignment back which I got 90% on. All I have left is to write one Canadian History essay due December 6th and then it's exams, baby.

I knew I was better than you Szuper, but it's just nice to have this kind of evidence.

How many courses do you take?  How many hours?  :P

Moreover, what courses do you take?

1) Facility Management
2) Team and League Management
3) Communications (its actually tough this year)
4) Sport Tourism (who would think this would be so much work and so unrelated)
5) Economics
6) Sales
7) Field Work = 14hrs x 2 days a week

Classes equal up to 21 hours to shove into 3 days, then you add on the approx. 28 hours of field work into 2 days.

I just finished my facility binder, it is over 200 pages long.  ALL of our own work, this is no crap that we just stuck in there.

Team and League isn't too bad, we had our project early and got it over with.  We just have a few tests left to do.

Communications we have at least 5 huge projects over the term.  We're just finishing up the second last one today, so far it 20 pages long (proposal)... then we have to do an informal report on some topic I'm not sure of.  That's sure to be another at least 10 pages.  Then our final is worth 40%.

Sport Tourism is just complete bullcrap.  Nothing major, got our big project done early in the year.

Economics is hell and pointless.  1 quiz a week, 4 chapter test and then a final ... am I back in grade school?

Sales, don't get me started.  I'm presenting today.  Trying to sell a product to our prof.  It's individual and has to be 45min-1hour long.

Placement is easy, but long.  Rather be there 24 hours then here.

Don't even try to tell me my course isn't hard.  I'm sick of everyone's bullshit thinking its an easy course.  We have university students from Brock and Queens who came into the post-diploma complaining that the course load was so heavy.  We started off with 100 people, we're left with about 60... a little less than that.

I actually wanted to know what courses Bruce was taking...I more than trust that you're overwhelmed because of the work they have you do…but Bruce’s call for more work means he’s most likely taking shiiiiite courses or is in the wrong program.

And for the record your classes frighten me…they’re way too business oriented for my liking…I’d probably get kicked out.

I do a lot of work taking both Politics and Philosophy…but it’s a completely different kind of work and is certainly not for everyone.  I have not had more than 14 hours of class in my four years of University, and I think the norm is about 12.  But what people don’t realize is that for a Social Science/Humanities major the lectures and seminars are mostly just for guidance and debate.  The main academic work is independent.  I also normally have at least 50 pages a week to read a course more this year as I am in fourth year and that’s to be expected(and then of course there’s your own research for papers and assignments etc.)….  And none of that textbook crap either…I mean real readings - where if you start skimming you’ll crash and burn.

If you don’t like writing then don’t take Politics and/or Philosophy because the main portion of your grade in every class will be your major papers.  Only rarely do you have an exam in a course…and if you do it’s just to make sure you did all the readings and not just those that relate to your research topic(s).  Although if you want to come to University and coast through with a 60-70% average then it’s not hard to do in my disciplines…but you often have to ask why people would do that?  What are you going to do with a 70% average Political Science degree?  If research and academia is not a serious passion then I would strongly suggest taking a more practically applicable post-secondary degree in either University or College.

  Thanks.  I do get defensive on that subject

I got everything finally off my shoulder, well, for a few days.  I have another COMM project, but she hasn't told us our due date which gives us a bit of a leeway.  Then all thats really left is exams/finals and 2 more big presentations (from 2 of those big projects).

I don't think I'd ever be able to take Political Science, Philosophy ... I can stand lectures.  Thats why I like College.  I will have to admit, I knew this course wasn't easy, but I didn't think this course would be *this* much work.  They say it only gets worse in 3rd year

Firstly, the "I welcome more work" comment was sarcastic. No need to get your panties in a bunch, Trent.

As for work load: 15 hours a week of classes, which can normally go to 18 or 20 with discussion groups. I also work anywhere from 16 to 24 hours a week at my job.

Much like Trent, my course is heavy in the reading section; usually 50-75 (more in some cases) pages a week per course.

I have five classes this semester and five next semester (none of which I get to choose, they're mandatory for my program).

This semester: Communication Research, Communications, Politics, Canadian History and World History.

Next semester: Macroeconomics, English Prose Fiction, World History, Physical Geography, and then either Essay Writing or Script Writing.

Luckily we got to choose our own groups, so I got some good group members working with me. We split up the work evenly and we all check over eachothers work to make sure its all rellavant to the assignments.

And while everybody is on teh topic of workload. For me personally my program is not deathly heavy but it is heavy and coule be worse.

I have six courses both semesters this year. This semester I have
1. Government Administration (3 hour class, once a week)
2. Intellectual Property ( 1.5 hour class, twice a week)
3. Accounting (1.5 hour class, twice a week)
4. Corporate Law (1.5 hour class, twice a week)
5. Landlord and Tenant (1.5 hour class, twice a week)
6. Civil Procedures ( 2 hour class, twice a week)

Thats a total of 17 hours of class per week, but we get some pretty insane assignments that require specific legal software that we can only get from the college.

I work 16 hours a week on weekends as my school schedule doesn't finish early enough for me to make it to work in time for 4:00pm when my shift would start if I worked on weekdays.

Now as for me, the way I learn cuts down the time I need to spend reading out of class. Most class mates hate me as I don't study, highlight points in th ebook that the professor is discussing in class and the book is closed at the end of class and is not opened until the next class. Mots people in my program spend HOURS reading as law can be very difficult to understand.

I am studying the Law Clerk program at Algonquin College.

And as for my "trick" of learning, its really pathetic in a way. I am not one to learn by taking notes, or learn by reading after classes, or even learn by just sitting there listening to the professor. I put the three of them together in one shot.

While the professor is giving the lecture I have the text book open with my highlighter and I find what the professor is discussing. Thus requiring me to skim the pages but catch enough so I can read relevant information and take it in. When I find the point that the professor made I highlight it and move onto the next point.

This does require alot of flipping pages back anfd forth but it works for me. And I dont study for exams.

Not knowing what the **** to do about your future, as the program you've been looking forward to since you were 15 is far from what you expected, and not having any other options either.

I'm dropping a year-long class that's making me want to shoot myself.

Now that that's decided, how to tell the parents is now the problem.
I disgust myself.
