General Hockey Discussions / Re: THE OFFICIAL: Emery Discussion [merged]

I wish Ray well in life and hockey but I doubt he will ever be an NHL'er again.  I hope he proves me wrong.

I can't see Emery not being back in the NHL next year, especially if he comes cheap.

If you will remember, he was left off the olympic team.

So was Crosby.

Your argument is stronger if you use the past WC and not the Olympics where it was clear they tried to rely too much on the 2002 veterans.

I'd also put Mike Richards in that list ahead of Spez.

I thought about that but your 1st line should be the one that gets the most chances/ice time to do offensive damage and Spezza will outscore Richards almost always. Not that I mind having Richards as a #1; I love that guy.

Yeah,i agree, he's not top 5 overall but if puck fancy means best 5 OFFENSIVELY then i will sure agree with that.

top-5 center like Spezza.

He's good, but not close to top 5 yet.

but I will admit that Jack was truer to the comic.

They named Nicholson's character Jack Napier! They also made him to be Bruce's parents' killer and didn't let him finish the movie in Arkham! I found his character strayed too much from the homicidal and chaotic criminal mastermind that he originally was, to more of the campy, novelty-weapon carrying psycho.

They don't not have anyone who had 40 plus goals. As for playing the they could get 20 goals each you can play that game with ottawa to.Yes they could have a couple guys who could get 40 plus. But to see there better then ottawa well stats don't lie.Ottawa out scored them by 25 goals last year.I am not saying there not good but your not giving ottawa much credit.

They were also missing their best goal-scorer in Simon Gagne for most of the year. After the big 3, Ottawa doesn't come close to Philadelphia in forward talent.

Sens Scoop says that they are willing to offer around 1.8mil with perhaps some bonuses, not sure if its true, just read it on the blog

Adding bonuses makes it worse. That bonus will count against the cap and will result in dead cap space this year; it can't be carried over to next year.

My idea of top 6:

1-2: are your star dmen(campbell-keith,lidstrom-rafalski,gonchar-whitney, niedermayer-pronger...just to name a few)
3-4: are your secondary well rounded dmen like beauchemin, phillips, brewer etc.
5-6: are your tough stay at home dmen like smith, volchenkov, richardson etc.

So very wrong.

aside from the big three this team has nothing going offensively.  They are one or two injuries away from disaster.

One or two injuries can severely hinder most other teams as well.

Mike Fisher, god love him, is only a second line player on this team, and only because we have nobody else even close.

And he seems to be producing at a pace similar to other 2nd line players in the NHL.

Smith is easily a top-4 defenseman.

I wouldn't say 'easily.' He struggled quite a bit last season and I'm not going to blame it all on his blown shoulders. I hope he rebounds in this new environment.

I guess that's an option but I see Vermette -- and not Meszaros -- as being the RFA who can bring back good value in a trade.

If we could get Bieksa for Vermette that would be an absolute steal.

Bieksa didn't look as good after he came back from that devastating injury. I still have hope that he'll return to that form again, however, and would also do a 1-for-1 trade immediately. The only problem is that this means Ottawa gains great depth at defense for a top 6 that is severely shallow. The only definite top 6 forwards remaining would be Heatley, Spezza, Alfredsson and Fisher. That's awful.

They matched the offer sheet that Edmonton gave to Vanek.  Bad idea if you ask me.  They should've taken the compensation and ran as Vanek didn't play like a $7 million player and probably never will.

Losing their top 3 offensive stars in the same off-season would have been a disastrous situation, both with the fans as well as the team they iced next season. As for Vanek, he may have started slow at the beginning of the season, but he finished at an incredible pace. At $7.1 million, he is overpaid, but not by that much and should rebound this season to show why he's still one of the most promising wingers in the game today.

Because Drury left, Briere left as well.

That, and he was offered the same terms on his contract ($25 million over 5 years) as the contract that had just expired ($5 million for the one year).

At least they learnt from there mistake and signed Miller to an extension.

I was thinking that Regier had "changed his tune" with the Miller signing.   :smily1263:  Methinks that it would be hard to keep a job as a GM if your "sign after the season" policy was failing as miserably as theirs was!

Well, he didn't really do that. The problem with Briere and Drury was that they wanted to negotiate during the season. With Miller, however, they extended him before his contract expired next summer and thus avoided the awkward situation of negotiating during the season.

Miller has a tendency to allow weak goals when he's minutes away from a shutout win, so I hate him from a fantasy hockey standpoint. Other than that, he's one of the most clutch goalies around and well worth the money.

are you implying that the owners aren't willing to shell out money for the top guys?

Daniel Briere was on a one-year $5 million contract the year he put up 95 points. So, of course it makes sense for the Sabres to offer him a 5-year contract at that same amount once he became a UFA!

Had the Sabres offered him around $6 million (he's currently making $6.5 million), I believe he would have stayed.

Scrams is an old long time respected member on these forums, watch the name calling/personal attacks please.

That was hardly name calling!

I'm sorry but calling these home-and-homes is stupid. When the sens play in buffalo it's an away game from their perspective.

So some games will be away-and-home? Lame.
