The Sens scored on an overtime Powerplay that wasn't a Powerplay. More great work by the refs.  :spin:

Yeah I saw that Metal and Chara was still on the ice when the puck was well into the Bruins zone. He should've also been called on an interference penalty on Burrows as he deliberately stops him from jumping up on the play.

Great road win in the end!

Chara could be called for interference almost every shift. But just like Pronger and Niedermayer 10 years ago, he has carte blanche to do almost anything out there.

I did notice that the refs were a little one sided last night.....

Well, Busy Busy in here suddenly.  Refs always suck, but I'm just happy in the end it was Boston sitting in the box for the winner.   :ccclapping:

Not mine, but telling nonetheless. :)

As for the OT winner, sure, it wasn't the greatest call, but what about that Turris penalty that ended up gaving the Bruins the tying goal on a 5-3 (technically 5-4 but Turris wasn't back in the play) after Phaneuf's slash. We could play what-if all day long after every game.
Title: Re: Gamday Thread - 2016/2017 Playoffs
Post by: Dagwood on April 18, 2017, 04:16:17 PM
Oh, I saw that, Chara took a dive me thinks and Turris ended up in the box as you said.  Works both ways right?

I think we are all old enough to "NOT"  let bad reffing interfere with a good game.  God knows, Sens have had their share of BS over the years ,,,, no doubt.

I've been a little disconnected from hockey recently. But I'm curious what you guys think of Phaneuf. He seems polarizing. Why is that? Wasn't he a top echelon dman in the league?
Title: Re: Gamday Thread - 2016/2017 Playoffs
Post by: Metalhawk on April 19, 2017, 01:43:42 AM
My opinion is that Phaneuf was never a #1 dman, but was cast (and subsequently paid) as such in Toronto. Of course, he doesn't live up to those expectations and therefore gets shit on for it. Phaneuf at $4.5-$5 million wouldn't get anywhere near the criticism he currently gets. He can be an effective #3, as long as his partner has some wheels to make up for his slowness.

I stand by what I said somewhere else in that I hope Phaneuf uses the summer to work on his skating with a skating coach. If he could get just a little faster he'd be a lot more lethal out there.

Post by: Dagwood on April 19, 2017, 04:18:26 PM
I agree Metal, he needs to be a bit quicker but then again it's why they partner him with Ceci and/or Karlesson.

Doc, I think Phaneuf was a monster when he played in Calgary.  But as Metal mentioned, He was cast in the wrong role in Toronto.  We're already seeing some benefit to Dion just being able to focus on his game without the distractions.  It's all good.  We are going to need his big body moving forward.

Definitely a good situation for him here away from the toxicity that is the Toronto market. I remember when he was in Calgary he was solid.

Post by: Viper on April 19, 2017, 10:21:08 PM
Yip, loved him in his Calgary days and always wanted him on the Sens D. The Toronto move, like you all said, was the wrong situation for him, far too much expectation on a guy who can't deliver at that level.

When he is left to it, with no pressure, that's when he comes up big and he's showing that with us I think. Still takes some stupid penalties now and again though and I'm like, "What the hell Dion?!"

What a game last night.  I still can't believe Karlsson got that puck to Ryan.   :icon_bowdown2:

Hope we wrap this up tomorrow night and our boys can rest up for the next round.  But as they say, game 4 is always the hardest to win so I won't be disappointed in the B's steal another from us on Home ice.

is it time for a new 2017 Playoff Thread?  LOL

I love how Vigneault is complaining of icing on Karlsson's goal, but just watching the replay you can hear the puck clearly hit a stick at centre ice at the bottom of the screen.

All that is needed is for Andy to stop with the gimme goals. The amazing saves mean nothing if you're gonna let in a weak one two minutes later.

Many Sens fans asking/praying for Andy to stay in the net. LOL

Game 3 was a stinker...yet my confidence remains high.  We have seen this pattern from them for a couple of years now.

I expect Game 4 to be good, in our favor. Andy normally shuts the door after a loss like that.  :happy dance:

Anderson usually bounces back, but this is two bad games in a row. While the Sens won game 2, that was in spite of Anderson's play. At least 3 of the goals Saturday should have been stopped.

Let's hope Boucher pushes the right buttons going in tomorrow's game.

Both games in NY they looked like crap. Not to mention most of game 2. There's a lack of fire in their game. As much good as Boucher's system has done for their defensive play, it seems to have sucked out the heart and emotion.

What a great game last night for the boyz.    Something Magical is happening here...unlike our past runs, this one is different.  What a team, Guts, No Quit, Bend but don't break.   I love it.

Pens/Caps...who cares..we match up well against either but the Pens seem to be hurting in which case I say.. Tough.  Lets keep this going   :spin:

So we definitely want the caps, right? Alot of star power on that pens team.

I've NEVER seen the Sens play like this. Ever. Who are the vocal leaders on this team? They must be good leaders. Alot of heart on this team.

Pittsburgh again. One of those teams the Sens just don't match well against. Hopefully they change that trend.
Title: Re: Gamday Thread - 2016/2017 Playoffs
Post by: Dagwood on May 11, 2017, 03:15:42 PM
I am hopeful we change the outcome.

2006-7  Won 4 - 1  - Round 1 - Sens went to SCF
2007-08 Lost 4 - 0 Vs Penguins in Round 1
2009-10  Lost 4 - 2 Vs Penguins in Round 2
2012-13 Lost 4- 1 Vs Penguins in Round 2
2016-17 ECF ????

Pens are 4 - 1 in Series wins against Ottawa.   It's our time if our team can tighten up things.
I still like our chance based on Heart and Desire of this team.
Title: Re: Gamday Thread - 2016/2017 Playoffs
Post by: BlindDruid on May 12, 2017, 07:49:54 AM
If they keep pounding on Crosby and keep him out of the play while keeping an eye on Malkin and creating lots of traffic in front of Fleury then the Sens have a good chance.  The big keys will be to win the forecheck game and keep cycling the puck.
Title: Re: Gamday Thread - 2016/2017 Playoffs
Post by: Metalhawk on May 12, 2017, 11:02:19 PM
 :icon_agree:

However, that's probably been Ottawa's biggest flaw these playoffs. Look at the comeback 6-5 win against NY. Most of the goals were deflections in front of the net. The next 2 games in NY, no one was going anywhere near the front of the net. Too much inconsistency on that front.
Title: Re: Gamday Thread - 2016/2017 Playoffs
Post by: Viper on May 13, 2017, 05:10:47 PM
We actually have the winning record in the season series 2-1 to the Pens 1-1-1. Not that that stands for much in the playoffs mind you but it does tell us that even with the Pens huge firepower, we can shut them down and beat them.

Looking to take at least one out of Pittsburgh in the first two games.

scoring 2 goals in 2 games, not good.

holding Pittsburgh to 2 goals in 2 games, pretty damn good.

All in all, pretty good. A split in Pittsburgh is a good way to start a series.

I think the Sens played really well defensively but their chances are too few and far between... They REALLY turned it up for the last few minutes last game and thats the kind of offense they need to beat the Penguins.
Pitt had control far too often and for too long though and it cost the W.

Game 3 in the books.   I know it's Pittsburgh but I think they are done.  They will muster up one more hail mary but you can see that bench is beyond frustrated with the Sens superior play.

And it's not just game-to game. It's often period-to period.

Hell, the same team will play like world beaters half a period, then suddenly forget how to make 10-foot passes, can't clear the puck and be hemmed in their zone for minutes at a time.
