That's going to leave a mark - USA Bounced by Slovakia
« on: January 02, 2009, 07:01:48 PM »
US falls 5 - 3 to Slovakia.  Out of medal round...ouch.

Goalie from Slovakia was lights out.  US Goalie was less than stellar.

Slovaks scored when it mattered, US couldn't hit the net when they had chances.

McGuire highlights the fact "US spent Millions on their hockey program.....for this?"

Shit happens....and it sure did today. I don't think anyone saw this coming but it was an entertaining game all the same.

Wow.  Didn't see that coming.

Shots were 49-19 for the U.S.  Both goalies screwed up their plans I'd say.

Good!  It means there's no chance we will have to face them again!  They were pretty good.

Was at thegame and it was alarming how poorly the US played - they were completely disinterested in the gam until the last 6 minutes. Obrien looked pretty good despite the poor play from his teammates.

Why has the crowd been so anti-US? It's quite embarrassing to be honest. First, cheering on Germany, then booing the US against Slovakia.

Well, you know if Canada had a major disaster it would be the Germans and the Slovaks rushing to help us while those lazy ass Americans wouldn't do a thing to help.  :sarcasm1

I guess the Americans were pretty much as good as we were and it pissed some folks off.

No kidding!  The only time the French want us all to go to war is when the German army are sipping coffee in Paris.

I don't remember who said that originally, but I thought it was funny as Hell.

Well, it was a bit of an anti-American crowd but also, Team USA played crappy hockey and the underdogs seriously outworked their opponents.  There might have been more cheering if there had been more to cheer about.  I was ready to cheer for good hockey from both teams but only one team brought it on.

It was a shocker indeed.

Not trying to start anything believe me but the crowd seemed to be cheering the Kaz. team also, when they played the American's.  I didn't see todays game so I can't comment on that.  :smily677:

I watch this tournament every year.  It's pretty much the same everywhere.  No one likes the American's because they are very arrogant.  I mean this generally speaking ... media for the most part.  People love to see the Americans lose.  Especially when they are the favorites or in the Olympics where they dominate a lot of the summer sports.  Nothing wrong with booing them.  Is it disrespectful that Sens fans boo the Leafs or Leaf fans boo the Sens?  No, not really.  The anthem's not booed, and there were very faint boos for the player of the game.

US completely gave up on Canada's 6th goal in the last 5 seconds... the guy just stopped.  No motivation.

The US was the better teams in terms of puck possession.  Slovak's goaltender was simply amazing ... I just can't believe some of the saves he made.  He deserved all the applause he got.  The rest of the team, while fast, were fairly mediocre.  It's nice to see upsets ... at least when its not against your team.

I did not like a lot of the high hits the Americans were throwing.  I will admit my Team Canada bias didn't notice anything with the Cdn players, but there were a lot of things that should not have gone uncalled.

I disagree, I think there is a big difference between booing an NHL team and a team representing their country. If this tournament was held in Western Canada the fans would have been cheering for the US team, period.

This is Canadian arrogance, NOT American arrogance.

Well the Americans are one of our chief rivals in the tournament and everyone loves cheering for an underdog.  I'm sure you'd see some cheering if a massive underdog was beating the Russians or the Swedes.  But I still couldn't help but feel some anti American sentiment was mixed in there, which isn't very cool.

It wasn't just the Americans getting booed - it was the Senators!  During the Russian/Czech game they showed a fan in the stands on the jumbotron proudly wearing his new Sens jersey and 20,000 people booed it.  Yikes - never heard that before!

And yes, we did cheer for Kaz over the Americans.  Somebody had to cheer on those poor kids!  The Canadian fans completely adopted that Kaz team.
