Google Street View
« on: October 08, 2009, 07:46:25 AM »
Ottawa Street View images are online.  Very Cool

Go to Google Maps, Punch in your address and providing you don't live in the bush, you should see a little stick man you can drag over to the map and see the street view of your Home/Business/Etc....

Still not sure what I think about this.  While they use software which blurs out peoples faces and license plates, I find it allows people to see too much.

I understand the benefit that it allows people who are planing on going some place they are not familiar with to "scope" out the area before to get an idea of what it looks like, land marks, etc. I see no benefit or reason why it should be available for residential areas.

Luckily where I live now I seem to be "too far in the bush" to have my house on display for the world to see, but it's still close and it is really only a matter of time.

Sure, the cool thing is I was able to view the houses we lived in back in BC and it is just amazing to see how things have changed in 10 years.  A quiet road I grew up on has now been turned into a main road, no more street hockey for those kids.

I don't mind it really.  The info people see, plates and faces, isn't exactly hard to get since you are out and about where people can see you anyways.

Right now my future condo is only an open field so no worries here. :)

You know there has to be some guy, somewhere who's pooping himself because the day they drove down his street, taking the picture was the day his piece on the side was over and her cars on his driveway for all the world to see.

A friend of mine got a ticket from photo radar and the picture clearly showed his girlfriend in the passenger seat, much to the chagrin of his wife who opened the mail.

Oh well, don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

A buddy of mine had his plate stolen off his motorcycle in Southern Ontario. For months he was being billed for the 417, complete with photos of the guy who stole his plate riding his bike.  :laugh2:

No street view available of Stittsville at all, and I wouldn't exactly call us bush dwellers. Interesting though, I toured my in- laws' neighbourhood with the street view, and I was able to look into some of their neighbours' windows...
A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.

Yes, you can zoom in pretty well and the image quality is remains each zoom level.

I am just in Navan and was surprised to see we were not included in the street view.

Thats not live. I just looked at my friend's store on Rideau and his old Saab is parked there. That car broke down a month ago! He doesn't have it anymore.

The images were taken last spring.

Of course it isn't "live" as in a live broadcast, but rather the system in Canada has gone "live".

Yes, but there's a principle involved.

No street view for us.  I prefer it that way.

If they ever do drive by where we live, they'll probably get a picture of one of the horses in the front paddock 'fertilizing' it  ;)

Well I want my money back.

   The google car cruised the neighbourhoods taking pictures of streets.  It stands out, so of course people look at it and get a nice picture.  My neighbour is half way down her driveway gawking.
